Top Value Tuscan Red from 2007

2007 Piaggia Carmignano "Il Sasso"

Are you looking for a really good “traditionally styled” Tuscan red? One that carries all of the classic Sangiovese character you love? We’ve got just the wine. The 93 point 2007 Piaggia Il Sasso Carmignano.

Antonio Galloni of the Wine Advocate rated the Piaggia Il Sasso Carmignano at 93 points, higher than every other 2007 Tuscan red under $25 that he tasted. 183 of them!

A blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvgnon, and Merlot, Piaggia Il Sasso Carmignano spends 20 months in new oak. Despite the time in oak the wine is perfectly balanced, with an elegant style, and when you taste it, there is no doubt that it’s from Tuscany.

The wine gets better and better as it sits in the glass. A great Tuscan red for just $22.99 per bottle!

Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate 93 Points-- The 2007 Carmignano Il Sasso may very well be the flashiest, most sexy Carmignano I have ever tasted. Mint, dried roses, flowers of all sorts and fragrant red cherries are woven together in a soft, textured fabric of incomparable elegance. The inner perfume carries through to a soft, weightless finish that impresses for its silkiness and finesse. I can’t think of too much more to say, except that this is beautiful juice. Il Sasso is 70% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet and 10% Merlot. In 2007 the fruit was picked from the 5th to the 15th of October, late even by this house’s standards. The wine spent 20 months or so in 100% new oak, very little of which is felt. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2017.
