A great drinking wine with a price to match!

Malbec may have originally been associated with Cahors and Bordeaux in France, but it is the Mendoza region of Argentina where Malbec's greatest fame lies. Here on the eastern slope of the Andes mountains, Malbec produces wines of rich flavors, lush mouthfeel, and silky tannin. Ocaso Malbec has all of the best characters of Mendoza Malbec, and brings them all at a super price.

It is soft and flavorful with expressive notes of espresso, nutmeg, charred toast and black/blue fruit, in a medium bodied, smoothly structured package that leads to a long, savory finish. It is a great match to a wide range of foods, from Argentinean style parilla grilled meat to American BBQ to roast chicken and even rich pasta dishes.

Food Friendly, Drinks Great, Top Wine for the Summer

As Kathy Brindle, Gary's Wine Associate, discovered one night when she took a bottle home, it's all about versatility. "What really impressed me about the Ocaso Malbec was how food-friendly it was," Kathy says. "It stood up to a gorgonzola-topped grilled filet mignon, but it didn't overpower a side dish of angel hair pasta and summer veggies. And I could imagine how the ripe blackberry fruit flavors and long smooth finish would also make it a great match for BBQ chicken." This is a soft and pleasant red wine that pairs great with almost everything. Of course, it should be no surprise. It hails from the good-food-lovin' country of Argentina!

"2007 Cabs are getting a lot of attention right now, but when Robin came to me with her 2006 Blueprint, I was pleasantly amazed at the quality. Of all the '06 Napa Cabs I've tasted, this is by far one of the best wines for the price. You just have to try this for yourself. Outstanding." - Gary

Unparalleled History in Napa Valley

When we talk about forefathers of our country, we have endless numbers of people to thank for pioneering different industries. But for Napa winemaking, one of the true forefathers was Gustav Neibaum, the great-great grand-uncle of Robin Lail, steward of Lail Vineyards. Neibaum founded Inglenook vineyards in 1879, making history in this still-young winemaking region.

Today Robin carries the torch with Lail Vineyards where they make this amazing Blueprint Cabernet Sauvignon (an homage to her husband's profession of architecture) from both estate fruit and fruit from some well-respected growers throughout the Napa Valley appellation. With the help of well-known winemaker Philippe Melka (Vineyard 29, Bryant, Melka Metisse), Lail produces a beautiful Bordeaux-style blend with flavors and aromas of blueberry and fresh garden herbs and a long, smooth finish.

This Napa Cab is drinking amazingly right now ... a must-try!

Robert Parker 90 Points
Another new offering is the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Blueprint, which is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot aged in 50% new oak. It is meant to be a reasonably good value by the standards of Napa Valley Cabernet, and it fulfills that task admirably. The deep ruby/purple hue is accompanied by notes of chocolate, black currants, earth, and spice. Medium to full-bodied and soft, it is ideal for drinking over the next decade.

One can't say enough about what proprietors Daniel and Florence Cathiard have accomplished at this estate since 1990. Regrettably, I am old enough to remember how horrible the wines were before the Cathiards purchased the property. They have fashioned one of the most consistently outstanding wines, both white and red, over the last two decades, and their 2009 probably eclipses any previous performance. An opaque purple color is followed by an explosive nose of graphite, black currants, licorice, incense, and a hint of black tea. The wine hits the palate with extraordinary density, unctuosity, and richness, yet it never comes across as heavy or overbearing. Deep and full-bodied with sensational concentration as well as remarkable purity and precision, this brilliant wine possesses the high, but sweet tannins that are a hallmark of the vintage, and exceptional delicacy allied to massive power and richness ... a rare combination indeed. This prodigious effort should drink well for 30-40 years. Bravo! (Tasted five times.) Drink 2010-2050.

Wine Spectator 95-98 Points

Clean. Blackberry and lightly toasted oak with coffee and cedar. Full-bodied and a very, very powerful structure. Blockbuster. Massive and dense, yet remains agile. A triumph for this estate.

Neal Martin's Wine Journal 94-96 Points

Tasted at the chateau. Picked between 25th September and 17th October, 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot cropped at 32 hl/ha, this has a very sleek, well defined bouquet, very pure with dark berried fruits, just a hint of coca and dark chocolate powder. Very focused, very linear at the moment but developing a lovely saline/estuarine character towards the finish. The palate is full-bodied with very silky tannins, harmonious, sensuous, very good weight and acidity, layers of ripe black, coca-tinged fruit with a sense of nonchalance and self-assured swagger towards the finish. Very pure, very long on the finish, leaving the mouth tingling with pleasure. This is a very assured Smith Haut Lafitte. Tasted April 2010.

Jancis Robinson 16+/20 Points

Moderate and rather cool and intriguing on the nose. Some sweetness at first and then slightly inky. The tannins are far from the most supple but they just about do the trick without being too drying on the finish. Just a little bit gawky, and there's some alcohol on the finish. Date tasted 2nd April 2010. Drink 2016-2026.

Decanter 18/20 Points

Dense red, fine rich and wonderfully succulent and briary wild fruits nose, rich, robust vineyard fruit with internal spice, energy and depth. Drink 2016-30.

The best wine ever produced at this estate, the 2009, a 53% Cabernet Sauvignon and 47% Merlot blend bursts with kirsch, black currants, camphor, and tobacco aromas and flavors. Very opulent, this seductive, lush, concentrated wine is a classic as well as a great sleeper of the vintage. Drink it over the next 12-15 years.

Jancis Robinson 16.5/20 Points

Life and vivacity and succulence here. This speaks to me – quite an achievement since it’s the penultimate wine tasted in a very long morning. Well done! Great succulence and freshness but no austerity.

Having just had the 2000 Branon, which performed unbelievably well, this is definitely a wine for connoisseurs to seek out. The problem is that just under 500 cases were made, all from relatively old vines planted in the early sixties. This blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc is from a parcel of the Branon vineyard sandwiched between Haut-Bailly and Malartic Lagraviere in the heart of Leognan. The 2009 reveals smoky, earthy, barbecue notes intermixed with creme de cassis, blackberry liqueur, charcoal, and graphite. This hugely concentrated, intense, dense, full-bodied powerhouse possesses silky tannins, plenty of glycerin, an over the top, extravagantly rich mouthfeel, and a finish that lasts nearly 60 seconds. A potential legend in the making, this wine should drink well for 30+ years. (Tasted once.) Drink 2010-2040.

Wine Spectator 92-95 Points

Love the nose on this, with blackberry, licorice and stone. Full-bodied, with supersilky and ultrafine tannins. This wine goes on and on.

Neal Martin's Wine Journal 91-93 Points

Tasted at Clos l'Eglise. This has a ripe black cherry, briary, redcurrant tinged bouquet with very fine definition and clarity. The palate is medium-bodied but with firm tannins, quite robust, a broad-shouldered, quite powerful Branon that grip the palate, earthy tones towards the weighty finish. Excellent. Tasted April 2010.

Decanter 16+/20 Points

Black red, big smoky Havana tobacco nose, full and with quite grippy Cabernet fruit, but good structure and will age well. Drink 2014-20.

Beautiful floral-infused black fruits jump from the glass of this opaque ruby/purple-colored wine. Possibly richer, denser, and even more complete than the brilliant 2005 (although it is still too early to say that definitively), this is certainly a more opulent, succulent style of wine than even the 2005, which had surprising flesh for a wine from that vintage. The Right Bank consultant Stephane Derenoncourt has performed some magic here, as recent vintages attest, and the wines are often fairly priced as well. This full-bodied Prieure-Lichine should drink well for 20-25 years. (Tasted two times.) Drink 2010-2035.

Wine Spectator 94-97 Points

Complex aromas of mineral, blueberry and currant follow through to a full body, with superfine tannins and a long, long finish. This is exceptional. Best of all time.

Jancis Robinson 16.5/20 Points

Very pale rim. Sweet, heady nose. Very sweet start on the palate and perhaps not quite enough refreshment factor? Tannins slightly rustic but there is lots of pleasure here. Date tasted 31st March 2010. Drink 2016-2027.

Decanter 17/20 Points

Deep red, fine floral wild roses Margaux nose, very good ripe fruit and harmonious Cabernet-Merlot blend, quite forward, attractive fleshy fruit and will age well. Drink 2014-20.

It's going to take a lot for this wine to equal or eclipse the 2005, but it is a different style of wine. While the 2005 is slightly more structured, with more aggressive tannin, this has more fat, texture, and more tactile magnetism going for it. I suppose the best thing is to own both. Opaque ruby/purple, with a beautiful nose of charcoal, forest floor, and black fruits, the wine hits the palate with great intensity, a sumptuous texture, yet brilliant precision and purity. This is a superb wine that should drink well for 20-25 years. (Tasted three times.) Drink 2010-2035.

Wine Spectator 97-100

This is absolutely fabulous. I love the complex aromas of ripe fruit and fresh flowers that turn to mineral and raspberry, along with tannins on the finish. This changes all the time. Full-bodied and dense, but so beautiful and long. The layers of ultrafine tannins just turn off the tip of your tongue.

Neal Martin's Wine Journal 93-95 Points

Tasted at a negociant. A blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot 4%, Merlot 35% and Cabernet Franc 8% picked between 29th September until 16th October. This has a ripe, black cherry, briary, graphite tinged bouquet that exudes purity, feminine charm and unlike some other Margaux wine, does not forget where it was born. The palate is medium-bodied with a lively, slightly peppery entry, very fine but robust tannins, very focused with a sense of "controlled power" on the finish. This is a very classy, sophisticated Margaux demonstrating great persistency and elan. Excellent. Tasted March 2010.

Jancis Robinson 17.5/20 Points

Lovely sap on the nose here - really appetising. Round and gentle - could do with just a tad more freshness perhaps. But there is so much crammed in here for the future... Persistent and promising. Date tasted 31st March 2010. Drink 2017-2032.

Decanter 17.5/20 Points

Fine dense red, strikingly vibrant cassis nose, very good clear fruit with density and length, quite tight now and will open up well and always be distinctively spicy. Drink 2015-24.

One of the outstanding successes of the 2009 vintage, this may surpass the superlative 2007. It has a more understated nose at the moment, but is very well defined with honey, white peach, orange peel and crushed stones. The palate has a viscous entry, is very well balanced, very powerful with great depth and effervescent minerality. Layers of botrytis layer across the mellifluous finish that is beautifully defined and sensuous. Fabulous.

Wine Spectator 94-97 Points

Pear and lemon pie aromas and flavors. Full and powerful, with lots of sweet fruit and a long, spicy finish. Racy, layered and beautiful.

Jancis Robinson 18.5/20 Points

Big and rich and bold and overwhelming almost. A bit of spice and so much sugar! This deserves very high points for its combination of sweetness and purity. Great weight. Really very good indeed. Bravo AXA for allowing these decisions. Date tasted 29th March 2010. Drink 2016-2040.

Decanter 19/20 Points

As in 2008, a triumph! Glorious fruit content, nobility of body, balance, taste and aftertaste, perfect precise winemaking, immense future. Is it the best since 1899 or 1928? I say yes, without any doubt!

Bill Blatch

Pierre Montégut has had some challenges since arriving at Suduiraut in 2002. But to have brought off a success like 2009, with the rapidity of the botrytis stretching this large estate’s systems to the limit, is a real feat. His ‘09 continues the trend of more concentrated and sweeter wines since 1997 than previously, and, at 160 g/l, it is on a par with Rieussec. However, the resemblance ends there, and with slightly more alcohol and slightly less acidity, the structure of the Suduiraut seems softer and more frankly powerful. There is something of the 1990 in this. The usual minty and lively flavour character of Suduiraut is currently buried under all this power but you see it all there and it will be pushing progressively through during the coming months in barrel.

Robert Parker 94-96+ Points

The highest levels of polyphenols ever measured at Lynch Bages (20% higher than any prior vintage) are found in the 2009, which achieved 13.4% natural alcohol, and a normal pH of 3.64. Composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it is the greatest Lynch Bages since the outstanding duo of 1989 and 1990. The black/purple-tinged 2009 exhibits a glorious perfume of graphite, black currants, and subtle smoke, powerful, thick, unctuously textured flavors, huge yet sweet tannins, fabulous purity, and a finish that lasts 40-45 seconds. Five to eight years of patience will be required, but this is a 30-40-year wine from this popular estate run by the affable and highly respected Cazes family. (Tasted three times.) Drink 2010-2050.

Wine Spectator 96-99 Points

The nose shows amazing aromas of mint, spices and currant, with underlying licorice and tar. Full-bodied, with amazing fruit and a long, long finish. Powerful. Blockbuster, but balanced. So structured. Lynch has not made a wine like this since perhaps 1989 or 1982. Better than Wine of the Year 1985 Lynch.

Neal Martin's Wine Journal 94-96 Points

Tasted at the château and UGC. A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, raised in 70% new oak. Merlot was cropped from the 28th to 30th September and the Cabernet Sauvignon was picked from the 6th to the 12th October. The nose soars from the glass, pure blackberry, briary, pencil lead and a touch of tobacco. Very fine definition: reminiscent of the 2006 but with a little more horsepower. The palate is full-bodied with very well integrated new oak that really sings with the concentrated black fruit and does not disguise the minerality in this wine. Tons of freshness, that acidity really driving the wine to the finish and then the persistency is superb. Still very linear, with a strictness that is seductive. Tasted March 2010.

Jancis Robinson 17/20 Points

Dense crimson. Rich and spicy and lifted. Really rather flirtatious. Not heavy or dense but very nicely balanced without aggressive notes of rough tannin or greenness. Date tasted 1st April 2010. Drink 2016-2028.

Decanter 18/20 Points

Dense purple red, concentrated Cabernet cassis plus rich spiciness, big volume on the palate, expressive elegance over the natural vigour, lifted and long. Drink 2015-30.

It's no surprise that proprietor Alfred Tesseron has produced a possibly perfect 2009. He's been on a roll since 1994, and no other producer has done more work in the vineyard than Tesseron, who has moved to 100% bio-dynamic farming, reduced yields drastically, and instituted a draconian selection process. This vineyard, which sits on the high plateau of Pauillac adjacent to Mouton Rothschild, has produced a 2009 of extraordinary intensity and purity. It is outrageously concentrated, with silky tannin (the sweetest I have ever tasted in a Pontet-Canet as well as the highest measured), an opaque purple color, and copious notes of graphite, cassis, licorice, and subtle smoke and forest floor. Full-bodied and unctuously textured with striking purity and definition, it is a wine of colossal weight as well as elegance (in itself a poster boy for this paradox in 2009). This brilliant Pauillac requires a decade of cellaring despite its voluptuous texture. It should evolve for 50-75 years. (Tasted four times.) Drink 2020-2095.

Wine Spectator 95-98 Points

Delivers aromas of blueberry skin, fresh flowers, licorice and raspberry sauce, with something exotic underneath it all. Full-bodied, with wonderful clarity and freshness. It's like looking at a full moon on a crystal-clear night in the country. This keeps coming at you, with tannins and ripe fruit. What balance, yet power to the wine. I love how the wine changes and challenges you with every sip.

Neal Martin's Wine Journal 94-97 Points

Tasted on four separate occasions, including twice at the chateau, though actually showing best at a negociant. Representing 80% of the crop, 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The nose is very pure, blackberry, small black cherries, a touch of griottes, a hint of cedar and mint. Quite feminine. Not too powerful. Very fine definition. The palate is full-bodied with firm tannins, insistent grip and good acidity, perhaps one of the most structured, masculine Pauillac 2009s but that does not detract from the finesse and poise. But certainly there is backbone here that segues into a tertiary note towards the finish. Very focused, more minerally elements towards the finish, hints of black truffle and smoke towards the finish. Very good persistency, somehow, an assured Pontet Canet. Superb. Tasted March 2010.

Jancis Robinson 18/20 Points

Yields a bit more than in 2008, with more grand vin too. 81 ha total vineyards. This year they are trying for 24 ha by horse. They can't tell us the alcohol but think it's 13-13.5%.Very dark crimson. Firm and broad and very lively with real vibrant elderberry nose - there IS a bit of extra vitality in this wine! Very very nice and satisfying indeed. There is life to this and great breadth and depth. Intense richness that seems to come from the fruit rather than from winemaking. Something of Lafite's complexity and integrity. Plus Mouton's richness. Dry finish. Very well done. But it is not a wine you want to undertake young - still lots to sort out. Much less open than most. Dense - really quite dry on the end but appetising though very long term. Muscular. Date tasted 1st April 2010. Drink 2020-2035.

Decanter 18.5/20 Points

Dense colour and pure Cabernet blackcurrant fruit beautifully extracted with great length and perfect harmony, great purity of expression, exuberant yet restrained, great future. Drink 2016-30.

Robert Parker 90-92 Points

The 2009 Batailley should give the 2005 a run for its money. It is a slightly sweeter, richer, softer wine (somewhat atypical for Batailley as it is generally one of the more structured and backward of the Pauillacs) exhibiting a dense purple color as well as notes of smoke, blackberries, cassis, charcoal, and oak. Deep, full-bodied, rich, and already seductive, it should have 25+ years of evolution ahead of it. (Tasted two times.) Drink 2010-2035.

Wine Spectator 92-95 Points

Currant and blackberry on the nose, with hints of toasted oak. Full-bodied, with big, chewy tannins. This is the biggest Batailley in years. Lots of improvement here.

Neal Martin's Wine Journal 94-96 Points

Tasted at the château and UGC. Picking commenced with the Merlot on the 24th September, for the Cabernet we started on the 29th September, finishing on 11th October and the Petit Verdot the 12th October. A blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, this Batailley has a ripe nose of blackberry, black plum, sandalwood, mint and just a hint of white flowers. Not a huge intense nose, but much more refined, very Pauillac. The palate is medium-bodied, rounded and quite supple tannins, yet good backbone as always on this Batailley. Very harmonious, insistent but gentle grip, a slightly powdery texture towards the finish lending a pleasurable sense of umami. Very focused and elegant towards the finish, classic in style and yet very "2009". This has the potential to be a benchmark Batailley after bottling (just be prudent on the oak please!) Tasted March 2010.

Jancis Robinson 17 Points

Bright crimson. Pretty deep. Succulent and sumptuous on the nose. Lots of sweetness. Just a little attenuated but should deliver satisfaction eventually! Date tasted 1st April 2010. Drink 2019-2030.

Decanter 16.5 Points

Dense red, good leafy blackcurrant nose, good broad plummy fruit, smooth texture attractive leathery spice and good length. Drink 2015-24.

Robert Parker 92-94 Points

One of the best over-achieving, value-priced wines in Pessac-Leognan, Haut-Bergey's vineyard enjoys a superb location near Malartic-Lagraviere and Domaine de Chevalier. Composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest primarily Cabernet Franc and a dollop of Petit Verdot, the opaque purple-hued 2009 reveals a big, exuberant nose of charcoal, black currants, sweet cherries, and graphite. Dense and full-bodied, with beautiful purity, texture, and length, it should drink well for 20+ years. (Tasted two times.) P.S. I also tasted the brilliant 2000 Haut-Bergey in March, 2010, and it was still a youngster in terms of its development. Drink 2010-2030.

Wine Spectator 91-94 Points

Blueberry and spices on the nose. Full-bodied, with super well-integrated tannins and a berry, spice and dark cherry aftertaste. Really polished.

Neal Martin's Wine Journal 90-92 Points

Tasted at Clos l'Eglise. This has a rather pinched nose, blackberry, oyster shell, briary and crushed stones; very fresh and delineated, not powerful, but opening nicely with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, grainy tannins, quite meaty and grainy, some savoury notes towards the finish. Understated, approachable, nice sous-bois elements on the finish. Fine. Tasted April 2010.

Points
Generally a St.-Julien/Pauillac-like offering, the 2009 Lanessan seems more explosive and concentrated than prior vintages. I’m not sure it is the finest I have ever tasted, but it boasts a dense purple color as well as copious creme de cassis, cedar wood, underbrush, and spice notes. Beautiful opulence, silky tannins, and a long finish suggest this sleeper of the vintage will drink well for 2-3 decades.

Jean-Philippe Janoueix is the owner and winemaker for this "under the radar" Bordeaux Superieur called Le Conseiller. Jean-Philippe is more recognized as the owner and winemaker at La Croix St Georges and La Confession from Pomerol and St Emilion which consistently receive great praise from Robert Parker.

Amazingly, the Le Conseiller receives equally great press from Robert Parker and it's a great value as well. Parker has called it a sleeper of the vintage in almost every vintage produced. He even said the 2003 vintage was "reminiscent of a top Napa Cabernet Sauvignon." The 2006 was also called a "sleeper of the vintage" and we agree!

This is the best 2006 we've tasted under $30 and we've got it for just $19.99 per bottle, the lowest price in the country. And we're throwing in Free Shipping on six bottles and an additional $36 off coupon if you buy a case!

(Coupon Code: 36OFFBORD1)

Robert Parker 89 points

"A top-notch effort from Jean-Philippe Janoueix, this blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc is a sleeper of the vintage. Its deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by sweet blackberry and black currant fruit, licorice, earth, and camphor notes, a fleshy, succulent mid-palate, and a ripe finish. A very good wine from a humble appellation, qualitatively it transcends its pedigree. Excellent value."

2007 Domaine Du Pegau Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee may be the best that has ever been produced! The most recent rating was the 95 point score from the Wine Spectator.

This is your opportunity to get your hands on this great wine on what will surely be one of the top wines in the Wine Spectator Top 100 list in the fall and will sell out soon after that.

Wine Spectator 95 Points

This packs it all together, with the ripe plum sauce, braised fig and currant paste notes of the vintage matched with invigorating hoisin sauce, brick dust and grilled beef notes. The long finish drips with fruit, but stays framed by a wild edge that keeps this firmly planted in terroir. -JM

Robert Parker 94-96 Points

The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee, tasted from multiple foudres, stylistically, looks to be a hypothetical blend of the 2003 and 1990. The 2007 is full-bodied and powerful, with high tannins, high extract, and tremendous color, stuffing, and richness. It is like drinking a liquified, rare grilled steak mixed with ground pepper, roasted herbs, and spice. Juicy and pure, it explodes with the aromas of Provence. Dense, rich, more structured than the 2003, sumptuous, and deep (in the style of the 1990), it should evolve for 20-25 years.

91pt QPR Pinot Noir $1/bottle shipping on a Case

The hottest region for Pinot Noir that way over-delivers for the money is New Zealand and this time it's the 2008 Sherwood Estate on center stage. Quality Pinot Noir at an amazing price.

While Dayne and Jill Sherwood have rooted their family winery in the picturesque Waipara region of South Australia, they knew that if they were going to make a great everyday Pinot Noir they'd have to source from some vineyards in Marlborough. And that's just what they did, accessing grapes from their own Sandy Creek, Stoney Range, and Rowley Crescent vineyards. Displaying ripe, sweet plum notes and a little tangy cranberry, we think this is one of the best values in under $15 New Zealand Pinot Noirs. The Wine Advocate seems to agree with us, noting "The palate is very well crafted with fine tannins, well judged acidity allowing the joyous fruit to really express themselves: raspberry, a touch of blueberry and dark cherry. Given the price, this is exceptional value and comes highly recommended. Bravo!"

This is an extraordinary deal on one of the top wines from the Medoc in 2005. Grand Puy Lacoste might get overlooked in Pauillac with familiar names like Pichon Baron and Pichon Lalande getting most of the attention. But in this vintage it seems Grand Puy Lacoste has risen above the Pichons.

Just check out what Robert Parker and Neal Martin from Erobertparker.com have said about the 2005 Grand Puy Lacoste. We think it's a screaming buy - especially at 79.97! This will sell fast!

Neal Martin, Erobertparker.com 97 points

"Tasted single blind at Southwold. This is a stunning showing for Xavier Borie's estate, one of my highest scoring wines of the entire tasting and vindicating its performance in barrel. It has an incredibly intense nose of black fruits, a touch of pine cones, then dried blood and smoke, but again, brilliant definition with a sense that it is saving itself for later. Astounding definition on the palate, real depth here, ripe blackberry, earthy, a touch of briary, very controlled and refined on the finish. Great length. Majestic. Drink 2020-2040+ Tasted January 2009."

Robert Parker 95 points

The brilliant 2005 Grand-Puy-Lacoste exhibits classic Pauillac aromas and flavors of creme de cassis along with stony/floral notes. Proprietor Xavier Borie has created a wine that should rival the brilliant 1982, 1990, 1996, and 2000. Full-bodied with sweet tannin and superb length (a 40+ second finish), the purity of this beauty's black currant fruit is something to behold. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2030.

2009 Bordeaux Futures

http://2009bordeauxwine.com/

The 2009 vintage in Bordeaux was born with lots of expectation. At every stage of the growing cycle, the right combination of temperatures and rainfall occurred, leading to fruit with a ripeness and concentration nearly unprecedented in Bordeaux. As the harvest proceeded, the first whispers that it might be a truly great vintage were heard. In the winery, the wines proceeded through a steady, classic fermentation.

jon-at-petrus.jpgAs the first tastings from the vats indicated, the fruit of 2009 produced wines with superb concentration, ripe, sweet fruit, and record high levels of very smooth, silky tannins. The whispers grew to open discussion of the potential greatness of the vintage. After a few months in barrel, samples were drawn for the wine trade and wine press of the world to taste at the annual "en primeur" tastings at the end of March, the first chance for the wine world to evaluate the vintage. Decanter magazine’s Steven Spurrier attended the tastings, then called 2009 “the best vintage that Bordeaux had ever produced." The Wine Spectator's James Suckling said "If I add up what I have tasted over the past two weeks - about 550 samples roughly - I come up with one hell of a vintage for reds."

Among those in Bordeaux for the barrel tastings were Gary's Wine Bordeaux team of Jon Visser and Geoffrey Brooke. They tasted through several hundred different 2009s, many of them more than once.

Why is it important to you that Gary’s Wine team went to Bordeaux? You don't need them to tell you that Chateau Haut Brion and Chateau Petrus were great, although they will, if you ask. A vintage like 2009 produces great wines, but not every wine is uniformly great. What having "feet on the ground" for the barrel tastings does is to find which of the wines really excelled, and most importantly, which of the less well known wines outperformed their competition.

With the near perfect conditions, some of these unknown wines will provide spectacular drinking at very reasonable prices. Jon and Geof have tasted those wines, and combined with their years of experience at evaluating young Bordeaux, their selections and advice can provide you with many years of very enjoyable sipping in the future.

Robert Parker 92-94+ Points

This is the finest Gruaud Larose since the 1990. Without a hint of brett in the 2009, it exhibits an opaque purple color along with a big, sweet nose of creme de cassis, new saddle leather, spice box, and boysenberries. Made in a rich, broad, savory, juicy style with lots of succulence, but none of the masculinity and ruggedness often found in this offering, this wine is loaded with concentration and extract. The tannins are largely concealed by the remarkable intensity of fruit and density. It should be drinkable in 7-8 years, and last for 30-40. (Tasted two times.) Drink 2017-2057.

Wine Spectator 94-97 Points

Beautiful aromas of currant, black licorice and blueberry follow through to a full body, with chewy tannins and a long, juicy finish. Big wine. Could be better than the classic 2000.

Neal Martin's Wine Journal 92-95 Points

Tasted at the château and the UGC. The crop was picked between 23rd September and 29th September for the Merlot and 2nd October to 17th October for the Cabernet Sauvignon. A blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon and 32% Merlot, this Gruaud has a tightly wound nose of black cherries, a touch of black plum and black truffle, good definition and with time some more exotic aromas: hints of honey and a little espresso. The palate is medium-bodied, very linear on the entry but displaying very good definition, with notes of blackberry, a touch of raspberry, espresso, a little white pepper and a meaty character. It expands very well towards the finish, maintaining excellent definition and clarity, very good poise, a biscuit element inflecting the pure black fruits, an insistent but gentle grip and great persistency. Somehow the 1982 is coming to mind, and that is a great thing. Tasted March 2010.

Jancis Robinson 16.5/20 Points

Dark crimson. Interesting leathery, almost Syrah-like notes. Very neat and satisfying. Savoury. Just a little austere on the finish. Drying tannins on the end. Very sweet. Date tasted 1st April 2010. Drink 2016-2028.

Decanter 17.5/20 Points

Dense purple red, rich, robust warm autumn fruits, smooth and succulent, a touch of exotic spice, fine balance and length. Drink 2015-30.

We’ve discovered an amazing QPR (quality/price ratio) white from Loire that is perfect for the upcoming summer months. It is the 2008 Domaine de la Pepiere Muscadet Les Gras Moutons Eden. It has gobs of lemon, peach, and citrus fruits, and loads of minerality which you come to expect from the best Muscadet. This would be a great wine to have on the deck, preferably with an ocean view, with some fresh clams, oysters, or fish. Or just drink it to keep cool.

Josh Raynolds, Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar, on Muscadet,
“For somewhere around $15—and often less—one can drink a bottle of bracingly pure Muscadet that can sometimes rival much more expensive wines of a similar profile from other regions of the Loire Valley, not to mention Chablis, New Zealand and South Africa.

This is just a great glass of white wine that surely will not disappoint for anyone who likes dry, crisp whites like Chablis and Sauvignon Blanc, or anyone who just wants to try something different for a change. You can’t go wrong at this price!

International Wine Cellar 91 Points

Pale yellow. Mineral-driven citrus and green apple aromas are complicated by tarragon, mint and oyster shell. Tightly wound, nervy lemon and lime flavors show a distinctly salty quality and a deeper note of bitter pear skin. Loosens a bit with air and picks up a honeydew quality while retaining vivacity. Impressively precise wine with strong finishing thrust and lingering stone and quinine character.

The 2007 vintage is the best vintage since 1997 in our opinion! The Wine Spectator rated the 2007 vintage 94-97 points and Robert Parker rated the 2007 vintage 96 points! And this cab for under $25 is drinking extremely well right now!

We just received the new and highly anticipated vintage of our hottest selling Napa Cabernet Sauvignon between $20-30. We received our first 100 cases just last week, and it's already flying off the shelves. We're not surprised ... the 2007 Innisfree is easily the best vintage Phelp
s has produced since we started bringing it in a few years back! You don't want to miss out on this one!
The Innisfree 2007 is produced primarily from estate-grown fruit at Joseph Phelps, not far from where the $150 Insignia is produced. This is a deeply-colored Cab with loads of ripe blueberries, black currant, blackberries, great acidity, and long structured finish that oozes with sweetness. No dry tannins to be found here: this is juicy, big, and ripe California Cab. It's worth more than its price-tag, on par with a $40 Cab in our minds. But we certainly don't mind paying less, and we doubt you'll mind either!

A new state of the art winery was built at Chateau Lamothe Vincent in 2000. And their investment is paying big dividends. Seven straight gold medals since 2002 for their Chateau Lamothe Vincent Bordeaux Rouge. And it's a mere $11.99 a bottle!

Fabien and Christophe Vincent, the new generation at the head of the Vincent estate, continue to make accessible wines on every level and that is confirmed again in their 2008 Lamothe Vincent. Deep garnet in color, the smooth entry waylays into a mouth-coating burst of ripe black fruit, coffee and chocolate. Nuanced with spice, this wine is perfect for a nice dinner out or a quiet night at home.
