  • Parker calls it the Corton Charlemagne of California
  • Seen elsewhere for as high as $50 a bottle
  • Lowest price in the country at 29.99!

There's no doubt where this Chardonnay comes from. As soon as you pour it into the glass, the aromas of ripe tropical fruits and spice fill up the room. Nope, this is not a cool climate Chardonnay from France or even Sonoma; it can only be from Napa! A delicious, full-bodied Chardonnay that's sure to be a big crowd-pleaser!

Take a look at what Robert Parker said about Conn Valley's Chardonnay. "The Chardonnays are made with no malolactic fermentation, but have surprising weight, richness, and aging potential. Think of them as California versions of Corton-Charlemagne."

The 2007 Chardonnay looks superb, with terrific tropical fruit such as pineapple intermixed with some poached pear, brioche notes, and citrus oils. The wine has beautiful intensity, full-bodied power, and zesty acidity, no doubt from the lack of any malolactic fermentation.

La Rasina-The Power of Family in Montalcino

La Rasina is located on the fine southeastern slope of Montalcino. Rolling hills with roses climbing over the old walls of the main house create an atmosphere of loving attention in this small family run property. There are fewer and fewer of them, but this estate is still a true Montalcino born, family run estate.

La Rasina was founded in the early 1970's by the grandfather of the Mantengoli family, Santi. Later managed by Vasco, his son, and now by Marco, his grandson, the estate shows the dedication and excellence of an endeavor kept in the hands of one hardworking family over many years. Recent recognition given to Marco Mantengoli at La Rasina included top ratings and awards at literally every wine review published on Brunello.

Shows blackberries, with hints of minerals and dried flowers on the nose. Intense aromas. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, long finish. Very long and beautiful. Best after 2011. 2,500 cases made. -JS

Antonio Galloni Wine Advocate 90 Points

La Rasina's 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is a dense, full-bodied wine packed with ripe, dark plums, violets, new leather and sweet, fragrant spices. This is an opulent, fruit-driven style of Brunello, yet the wine possesses the gorgeous inner perfume, vibrancy and clarity of a top-flight wine. The sweet, long finish and soft tannins make this an excellent choice for drinking now and over the near-term. This is another outstanding effort from proprietor Marco Mantengoli. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2016.

Gorelli--Artisanal Brunello from High Altitude

Proprietor Giuseppe Gorelli takes an artisan's approach to winemaking, producing wines of flawless quality with distinctive character and personality on a very small scale.

The family originally established their reputation for great Brunello di Montalcino at the "Due Portine" property, owned by Giuseppe's father. The "Due Portine" property has now merged with that of son Giuseppe, and all releases come from the family's "Le Potazzine" label. From vineyards located in two areas of Montalcino, one closer to the town, and one in its southernmost slopes. They lie at relatively high altitudes, contributing to an aromatically driven, less robust style of Brunello.

Giuseppe Gorelli has been called among "the best of the younger producers of Montalcino, and an estate that has not missed a step since 1988" by Stephen Tanzer.

Le Macioche--Tradition at the Top of the Hill

Approaching Montalcino from the southeast, visitors to the medieval hill town first ascend the hill of Le Macioche, just beyond which the Le Macioche estate is located. This is some of the most desirable land in Montalcino, Biondi-Santi's famous Il Greppo is just up the road. At 1500 feet, the 7.5 acres of vines are among the highest of the entire Montalcino zone. There are no barriques at Le Macioche, only large oak casks are used. These are distinctive wines, showing elegant high-toned aromatics and complex floral-to-woodsy scents, with hints of underlying power and full body. These traditionally-made wines are defined by their well-articulated aromatics and firm tannins. They are among the most classically built wines in Montalcino.

A Family Estate Where the Vines are Lavished with Care and Love!

Fossacolle is a little family run estate. The owner Sergio Marchetti and his family take care of the vineyards and all the viticultural tasks, while his son in law Adriano Bambagioni is responsible for the vinification of the wines.

The tiny 5 acre vineyard is in a little Village called Tavernelle, in the south of Montalcino. Thanks to the small size of their estate, the vines are pampered thoroughly, as they consider the vineyard just an extension of their family garden. Rural peace and quiet, unpolluted woods and vineyards, the timeless colors and perfumes of Tuscany, and the breeze from the nearby Maremma create a perfect environment to grow and mature the grapes.

Reviews

Wine Spectator 93 Points

Very ripe and powerful, with ripe plum, fresh porcini and cinnamon. Full-bodied and powerful, with loads of fruit and powerful tannins. This has structure for the vintage. It's tight and closed right now. Best after 2010. 1,050 cases made. -JS

Antonio Galloni Wine Advocate 92 Points

The estate's 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is a big wine bursting with dark fruit. It remains a powerful, dense Brunello dominated by primary aromas and flavors, although occasionally notes of licorice, leather and spices emerge, hinting at the wine's complexity. The oak is beautifully balanced, and all the wine needs is another year or two in bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.

International Wine Cellar 92 Points

Dark, bright red. Rather tight but pure nose hints at raspberry, flowers and minerals. Pliant, perfumed and sweet in the mouth, conveying an impression of flesh without weight. Quite dry and classic but also rich and broad, boasting excellent definition and finishing with terrific structure, verve and grip. This maintained its vinosity for a good three days in the recorked bottle. Lovely traditional Brunello.

Poggio Antico--Where Everything Comes Together to Produce Great Wine

Poggio Antico is one of Montalcino's most consistent producers. The wines are made in a rich, fruit-driven style, that is sure to please. Located at an average altitude of approximately 1500 feet above sea level, Poggio Antico is one of the highest altitude producers of Brunello. The steady breezes at this altitude keep the grapes free from fog, frost and mildew and cool the grapes in the evening for optimum maturity. The south to southwest orientation of the vineyards catch the warmth of the midday sun. This combination of warm sun and cooling evening breezes guarantee ideal growing conditions, particularly during the crucial maturation period when the grapes gradually reach a perfect balance between sugar and acidity. The rocky, limestone soil ensures excellent drainage, further aiding the production of top quality raw material for the wine. The unique combination of altitude, positioning, and soil quality give Poggio Antico wines their special character and elegance.

Displays aromas of raspberries, flowers and minerals. Full-bodied, yet refined and racy, with hints of black pepper and blackberry character. Racy finish. Drink now. 5,180 cases made. -JS

International Wine Cellar 92 Points

Good deep red. Pretty aromas of currant, coffee, graphite, smoke and tobacco. Plump, silky and suave, with a restrained sweetness and lovely inner-mouth aromatic character to the spicy flavors. This broad, round wine benefits from harmonious framing acidity. Finishes with sweet tannins and very good length. Very expressive, ripe sangiovese.

Antonio Galloni Wine Advocate 90 Points

The estate's 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is a soft, supple effort. Silky tannins frame a graceful core of perfumed ripe fruit. This medium-bodied Brunello reveals terrific length and focus in a mid-weight, polished style. The wine is likely to acquire more complexity in bottle but its balance makes it one of the more accessible 2004 Brunellos. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2016.

Costanti--A Constant Presence in Montalcino Since 1555

The Costanti family has been part of Montalcino history since 1555, yet Andrea Costanti is anything but ‘old hat': young, brilliant and amiable, he very much moves with the times. Like Montalcino itself, he is both profoundly rooted in local tradition, and receptive to international, contemporary trends.

In 1983, Andrea took over from his uncle, Count Emilio - the man who first put Costanti on the wine map. A difficult task, yet this inexperienced youth not only coped with his huge new responsibilities, but actually upgraded and enhanced the family's reputation for making great Brunello. He achieved this by relying on his own fine instinct for wine and in-depth knowledge of the terrain's geological components. From vineyards of 25 acres of characteristic Tuscan "galestro" at 1,300 to 1,480 feet he fashions wines that display great aromatics and are some of the most refined, elegant wines made in the traditional style in Montalcino.

Reviews

Wine Spectator 92 Points

Rich and subtle, delivering plum, berry and ripe strawberry character, with dried mushroom undertones. Full, with a ripe, velvety tannin backbone and beautiful fruit. Features coffee and berries on the finish, with bright acidity. Best after 2011. 2,500 cases made. -JS

International Wine Cellar 93 Points

Bright medium red. Knockout nose suggests a wine of strong extract and extends one's Brunello vocabulary: cherry, peach pit, licorice, lead pencil, honey, jasmine, botanical herbs, you name it. Dry, classic and sharply delineated, conveying a strong impression of energy allied with great delicacy. This manages to be very ripe, broad and silky and at the same time virtually weightless. Finishes sweet, pliant, minerally and very long.

Antonio Galloni Wine Advocate 90 Points

High-toned aromatics lead to a firm, taut expression of fruit in Costanti's 2004 Brunello di Montalcino. Wild herbs, red cherries, tobacco and flowers are just some of the nuances that emerge from this chiseled, traditionally-made Brunello. The wine possesses gorgeous length and finessed tannins that provide lovely balance.

The Lisini Story

The Lisini estate, now covering a total of 380 acres and comprising some of the finest, most historical terrains in the Montalcino appellation, has been in the Lisini family since the early 1700s. Today, owner Elina Lisini is flanked by her grandsons Lorenzo and Carlo. Winery manager is Filippo Paoletti, and the winemaker is a living legend of Tuscan wines, Giulio Gambelli.

The present vineyard surface is 44.5 acres, all steeped in the area's most beautiful and wildest landscape: gently rolling woodland and vineyards, wild boars and deer, high up at 980 to 1,310 feet above sea level. Getting there isn't easy for city people: winding dirt roads bordered by thick vegetation, a sense of time suspended, surroundings meant for the comfort of pheasants and hedgehogs and grapes rather than modern-day motorists. Your reward at the end of the road is this stone and terracotta icon of tranquility and harmony, the Lisini villa with its 14th-century tower - seamlessly blending into the estate's natural backdrop.

Reviews

Wine Spectator 94 Points

Floral, with berry, plum and sandalwood aromas, as well as a hint of vanilla. Full-bodied, with firm tannins and vanilla, berry and plum flavors. This is dense, layered and balanced. Best after 2012. 3,000 cases made. -JS

Antonio Galloni Wine Advocate 93 Points

Lisini's 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is a racy, sleek wine loaded with super-ripe dark fruit. This is a fairly immediate style for this producer, yet the wine is highly pleasurable for the integrity of its fruit and its round, enveloping personality. Clean, minerally notes frame the finish, giving the wine a lovely sense of balance and proportion. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.

International Wine Cellar 92 Points

Good full, bright red. Pungent, high-pitched aromas of redcurrant, red cherry, rose petal, minerals and leather, lifted by a spicy component; rather Burgundian. Suave, silky, dry and classic; offers plenty of stuffing without obvious weight. This refined wine really saturates the palate with perfumed flavors of redcurrant, leather, mocha and underbrush. Has the juicy acidity and the firm tannic spine to support a slow and successful evolution in bottle. Very classy sangiovese.

Thie vineyards measure 60 acres, divided into five separate plantings, the "Crus" of Altesino, Macina, Castelnuovo dell'Abate, Pianezzine and Montosoli. Montosoli is bottled as a single vineyard, while the other four are used to produce the classic Altesino Brunello di Montalcino. Altesino has been a trend setter for over thirty years, being the first Brunello producer to use small oak barriques for aging and the first to promote single "cru" wines. Under new, dynamic ownership since 2002, the wines are sure to continue their quality, as well as their devotion to discovering new ways to make even better wines in the future, while still respecting the traditions of Brunello di Montalcino.

Fanti is Fantastic!

The San Filippo Estate has belonged to the Fanti Family since the beginning of the eighteenth century. It extends over 700 acres, of which 130 are specialized vineyards, the remainder being olive orchards, other agriculture, and forest.

The vineyards have been developed in an amphitheatre of south facing hills at an elevation of 1150 to 1400 feet. The soil is limestone with stratified formation of "galestro" (marls). The climate is extremely particular and leads to wines which are simultaneously robust and elegant, because of the strong exposure to the sun during the day thanks to the orientation of the hills where the vineyards are located, and with cool nights due to the fresh winds coming from the nearby mountains.

The beautiful Sangiovese produced by these conditions is then carefully vinified to produce the opulent, lush style of wine which has become the hallmark of Fanti.

Altero is Poggio Antico's flagship, introduced in 1983 as a departure from the traditional Brunello. It is aged entirely in small French oak barriques, rather than the classic larger Slavonian oak casks of Montalcino. The resulting increase in richness and depth of flavor is so clear that many other producers have followed the lead of Poggio Antico, and have adopted similar techniques.

Camigliano, the Marriage of the Ancient and the Modern

Inhabited since the Etruscan period, this estate was a lively center in the Middle Ages, and remains of the fired brick stones of that period can be found near the ancient walls of the castle, set on the top of a hill, surrounded by woodland and vineyards. The soil type is from the western flank of the zone known for hot rich wines.

The winery of Camigliano is divided into two buildings. The older one is underneath time master house and at least part of it was built at the same time as the old boundary-walls, around 1250 and 1280. During the eighties a new cellar, half-buried in the ground, was built beside the old one. It covers an area of 3,000 square meters and this is where most of the wine-making operations are done. The new cellar is fully equipped with modern technology. Its exposure together with its ventilating system ensures an all-year-round cool amid humid temperature. Wine is kept in temperature controlled tanks. Camigliano is an estate on the meteoric rise.

The estate's 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is a full-throttle effort loaded with dark fruit. The wine remains extraordinarily dense and primary, but occasionally hints of French oak, spices emerge to add complexity. The finish is long and vibrant. The Countess and the Flying Winemaker

The Argiano estate has a long and noble heritage, dating back to the 16th century, and has passed down through noble family members ever since. The Countess Noemi Marone Cinzano began a revamping of the estate in 1992, working with famed winemaker Giacomo Tachis. Since then, the Argiano estate has risen to the first rank of Brunello producers.

Now that the legendary Tachis has retired, the Countess has brought on Hans Vinding Diers, a young, "flying winemaker" of Danish extraction, who grew up in Bordeaux, and has worked over 40 harvests, despite his youth, by working in both hemispheres and on at least 4 continents. This combination of the tradtional, noble heritage and the energetic, forward looking is sure to continue keeping Argiano in the forefront of the Brunello world.

Antonio Galloni Wine Advocate 92 Points

The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is the first Brunello oenologist Hans Vinding-Diers made from start to finish at Argiano, and it represents a significant stylistic shift in direction. Among the changes Vinding-Diers instituted are lower temperatures in fermentation, which have given his wines gorgeous, detailed aromatics as well as notable textural elegance. The medium-bodied 2004 Brunello di Montalcino possesses perfumed layers of sweet ripe fruit that flow gracefully onto the palate, where sweet notes of tobacco, leather and spices come to life, adding further complexity. Finessed tannins round out this beautiful Brunello that is more about elegance rather than sheer power alone. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019.

Catch a Rising Star-San Filippo!

The San Filippo estate is a relative newcomer, having been established in 1972, and producing its first wines five years later. Robert Giannelli, the new owner has revamped the winery and its winemaking. The vineyards are in the portion of the Montalcino appellation that yields particularly elegant and well-structured wines. Their Brunello is made of 100% Sangiovese Grosso, from soils rich in clay, limestone laced with marl and fossils. These classic Montalcino soil characteristics lead to added complexity in the finished wine. Their finest vineyard, Le Lucere, is bottled separately from the rest of the estate owing to the added richness and depth of flavor that these superb grapes bring to the bottle. This up and coming producer is rapidly rising to the top ranks of producers of Brunello di Montalcino.

2004 Ciacci Pianrosso Brunello di Montalcino

The Ciacci Story

Ciacci Piccolmini is one of the most sought-after producers in all of Italy. This ancient estate has 86 acres of superior holdings in the prized Castelnuovo dell'Abate zone, including the "Pianrosso" vineyard. The Pianrosso vineyard is their finest Brunello planting, covering some 27 acres of ideal soils for the production of classic Brunello di Montalcino. At an altitude of from 800 to 1200 feet, it garners the benefits of cooling evening air to moderate the heat of midday, allowing the grapes to ripen more slowly, and completely, assuring that the greatest complexity and depth of flavor can be acheived. The vineyards of Ciacci are maintained at near pristine levels. The Brunellos emphasize finesse and balance, with layers of ultrafine tannins and subtle ripe fruit, yet they age incredibly well.

Reviews

Wine Advocate 94 Points

The estate's 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso possesses striking depth as endless layers of sweet, perfumed fruit emerge with tons of grace. This, too, is an intense, full-bodied wine. The balance here is utterly exceptional, and the wine's sheer plumpness makes for a highly rewarding glass of Brunello. Succulent dark cherries, spices, underbrush, minerals and new leather come to life as the wine sits in the glass, yet this remains a backward, structured Brunello in need of serious bottle age. The Pianrosso is a terrific effort from proprietor Paolo Bianchini. Ciacci's Pianrosso is an old-vines selection that spent 36 months in Slavonian oak. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.

Good deep red. Plum, spicecake and chocolatey oak on the nose; just this side of roasted. Then sweeter, deeper and more pliant than the basic release, with a chewier texture and an almost liqueur-like richness to its fruit. As big and lush as this is, it's got very good supporting spine and is not at all overly sweet. Finishes with excellent length.

A Brunello with its Roots in Long Island!

Americans John and Harry Mariani created this estate from scratch beginning in 1978, hiring enologist Ezio Rivella to oversee the winemaking. The work was completed in 1984, and today 2,400 acres of the 7,100 acre property are planted to grapes.

Brunello di Montalcino was Italy's first wine to be accorded D.O.C.G. status, a testament to its aristocracy, balance and fabulous proclivity for aging. Under the direction of Banfi's master winemakers, Sangiovese grapes are transformed into a remarkable world-class wine, perhaps the most respected red of Italy. Aged for a total of up to four years, including a minimum of two years in oak barrels, Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino is a wine of robust character. It possesses a rich garnet color, and a depth, complexity and opulence that is softened by an elegant, lingering aftertaste.

2004 Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino

Style: Red Wine
Varietal: Sangiovese
Region: Tuscany

Classic Brunello from Fuligni

Fuligni produces a classic range of Montalcino reds - Rosso, Brunello, and Super Tuscan, all consistently judged among Tuscany's finest.

The vines, which extend over 25 acres, are primarily located at altitudes varying from 1250 to 1500 feet above sea level. Here, the land is made up of a predominantly rocky terrain. New vines have been planted on land which is a mix of "tufo" and clay. The average age of the vines is about twelve years while some others date back over thirty years preserving the old Sangiovese clones of the estate with a lesser density per hectare.

A thorough pruning is done which involves the important process of thinning out the grapes to ensure a yield per acre ranging, on average, from 2 to 2.5 tons of grapes. The harvest is done manually and includes the personal participation of the owners with frequently repeated walks between the rows of vines to guarantee a rigorous selection of grapes.

The grapes are vinified separately according to cru, in a classically inspired international style characterized by a strong backbone of acidity and smooth, polished tannins. After fermentation, they are aged in the restored convent, which was transformed into barrique cellar. The former convent's cool, cloistered tranquility supplies ideal conditions for their aging. The result is called by the Wine Advocate as "... a reference-point producer in Montalcino whose wines capture a middle ground between modern and traditional approaches."

Has a wonderful nose of roses, strawberries and sandalwood. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and an aftertaste of berry, cedar and light coffee bean. Caresses every inch of your palate. Very fine, yet chewy. Needs time still. Best after 2010. 2,265 cases made. -JS

International Wine Cellar 93 Points

Good deep red. Deep, vinous nose combines redcurrant, menthol, graphite, flowers and medicinal herbs. Big, round, rich and savory, showing more soil-inflected saline and mineral flavors than primary fruit. This focused, taut wine is not made in a sweet style but is quite elegant, finishing classically dry, with a broad dusting of tannins and a distinctive stony element. Give this some time in the cellar.

Antonio Galloni Wine Advocate 94

The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is simply awesome in the way it marries a gorgeous expression of ripe, dark fruit and a classic sense of structure. A rich, enveloping wine, it flows onto the palate with masses of black cherries, minerals, spices, tar, new leather and smoke. This is an exceptionally well-balanced and finessed Brunello full of character. The tannins remain rather firm but there is enough sheer density of fruit that opening a bottle on the young side is still likely to be rewarding. Simply put, Fuligni's 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is not to be missed. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.

Pacenti, the Cream of the Crop in Brunello di Montalcino!

Giancarlo Pacenti is one of the leaders of the younger generation of innovative Brunello producers who take inspiration and new ideas from outside of the zone and often beyond Italian borders.

His two vineyards lie in two very different areas of Montalcino: one to the northeast of the town, where the wines develop full, ripe qualities; and one to the hotter southwest area, which produces a more powerful, minerally wine. Pacenti doesn't bottle single-vineyard wines, preferring to blend the two lots together to make just one wine, but one that is infused with the best qualities of each vineyard, which complement each other, producing a wine with more breadth of flavor and balance than either vineyard alone would produce.

The Wine Spectator says, "Giancarlo Pacenti is the best winemaker in the appellation of Brunello di Montalcino. Everything is done in the best possible way and at the right time in his well-kept vineyards and the pristine small winery under his house. His Brunellos are usually a blend of different vineyards from both the south and north sides of the Montalcino hill, giving them great richness and structure as well as freshness. They are aged in French oak barrels yet show very little wood character, and their crystal clear style is one that ages extremely well."

Wine Advocate 97 Points

The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is a huge, dense wine that explodes from the glass with tar, smoke, earthiness black cherries and minerals. The wine possesses dazzling concentration and tons of richness, as waves of fruit coat the palate in stunning style. This big, dramatic Brunello needs time in bottle, but it is nothing short of magnificent today. The balance, and the integration of the French oak in particular, is brilliant. For those who are curious to try a bottle now, the wine should be opened a few hours in advance as the tannins are imposing at this stage. This is a rare Brunello of superb pedigree and complexity. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029.

Wine Spectator 95 Points

Perfumed with rose and ripe cherry. Full-bodied, with bright acidity and clean, mineral, floral and berry character on the palate. Tight and firm, but shows wonderful promise. This is chewy and develops in the glass. Best from 2011 through 2017. 3,400 cases made. -JS

International Wine Cellar 92 Points

Bright, deep red. Restrained but pure aromas of dark berries, flowers, licorice and curry powder; slightly reduced. Juicy, spicy and fresh in the mouth but youthfully tight, with lovely subtle perfume accentuated by minerality. Not especially dense but plenty intense, wonderfully vinous and light on its feet. Finishes very long and aromatic, with firm tannic spine: this really fills the olfactories! Very nicely avoids the warm side of the vintage.

In Vineyards, Like Real Estate--Location, Location, Location

In 1890 the Franceschi family purchased the Il Poggione estate in Sant' Angelo in Colle in the southwestern part of the Brunello di Montalcino appellation. The vineyards are located in the highest growing area at over 1300 feet above sea level. Elevation is very important for growing and ripening Sangiovese grapes because the vines and the fruit need cool air in the warm summer months in order to ripen fully.

Embracing the sun throughout the day, the grapes produce wines that are more structured and fuller bodied. The cool evening and morning temperatures created by the altitude help the fruit to ripen more slowly and as a result Il Poggione is able to produce profound, complex Brunello with great aging potential. The daytime heat of the summer is moderated in this area by cool maritime breezes which insure excellent ventilation, helping to prevent mildew, and ensuring the healthiest fruit possible.

Il Poggione vines are also among the oldest in the appellation. Because the roots reach so deeply into the subsoil, even during arid or hot vintages, our vines are able to find the water table. The stress caused by their search for water makes the fruit even richer and the wine even more profound and long-lived.

Wine Advocate 95 points

The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is awesome. This finessed, regal Brunello flows onto the palate with seamless layers of perfumed fruit framed by silky, finessed tannins. The wine remains extremely primary at this stage, and its full range of aromas and flavors have yet to emerge, but the sheer pedigree of this Brunello is unmistakable. The elegant, refined finish lasts an eternity, and subtle notes of menthol, spices, licorice and leather add final notes of complexity. The estate's 2004 Brunello is a wine to buy and bury in the deepest corner of the cellar. Brunello is never inexpensive, but this is the real deal, and in relative terms, it is one of the world's great values in fine, cellar worthy wine. Incredibly, there are 18,000+ cases of the 2004 Brunello, so it should be fairly easy to source in various markets. The Brunello is made from four vineyards ranging from 250 to 400 meters in altitude, all in Sant'Angelo in Colle. The wines from the various vineyards were aged separately in French oak casks prior to being assembled and bottled. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2034.

International Wine Cellar 93 Points

Good deep red. Sexy nose offers raspberry, spices, coconut, dried flowers, tobacco and potpourri: almost Lafite-like. Then suave, complex and energetic in the mouth, offering lovely vinosity to the sappy red fruit and floral flavors. Finishes long and vibrant, combining enticing sweetness and firm, saline grip. Really spreads out horizontally on the back.

Wine Spectator 91 Points

Has blackberry and coffee bean, with a hint of cream on the nose. Full-bodied and tight, with slightly austere and chewy tannins, but there is pretty, ripe fruit underneath it all. Best after 2010. 16,665 cases made. -JS

The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino reveals superior clarity and delineation in its black cherries, violets, licorice, spices and new leather in a style that artfully balances a very ripe expression of fruit with firm structure. This vibrant Brunello offers terrific length and compelling inner perfume that never trails off. The tannins build on the finish, so a few additional years of bottle age seem prudent. This is a superb effort from proprietor Elia Palazzesi and may very well be his finest wine yet. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.

Donn and Molly Chappellet have been making great hillside Cabernet on the slopes of Pritchard Hill, overlooking the Napa Valley for over forty years. They have been joined on the hill by such luminaries as Bryant and Colgin, but their wines take a backseat to none.

The 2006 Pritchard Hill is a big wine in the concentrated hillside style, but with a real sense of elegance and grace to balance the power and produce a complexity that is stunning. The center of rich berry fruit is wrapped in layers of mineral, espresso, and spice aromas that lead to a finish that lingers, echoing the great flavors on the palate.

The Chappellets' romance with Pritchard Hill started when Donn and Molly Chappellet first glimpsed its spectacular vistas. Perched 1,200 feet above the floor of the Napa Valley, the atmosphere at the Chappellet family's winery and Pritchard Hill estate vineyards is serene and peaceful. You can't help but fall in love with the breathtaking views and the gentle mountain Donn and Molly Chappellet made their home.

The Chappellet family has been crafting world class wines from their Pritchard Hill estate vineyards since 1967. Spurred by the notion that mountain fruit would make superior wine, Chappellet followed the advice of legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff and settled on the rocky eastern slopes of the Napa Valley. The Chappellets were the first to plant vineyards exclusively on high elevation hillsides and the second winery to be established in the Napa Valley after Prohibition. Rising from 800 to 1,800 feet above sea level, Chappellet's Estate Vineyards on Pritchard Hill have earned acclaim for yielding grapes that produce mountain-grown wines of rare depth, longevity and elegance.

The foundation of Chappellet winemaking program is focused on creating extraordinary age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon that expresses the unique characteristics of the fruit from Pritchard Hill. The rugged terroir of Chappellet's vineyards produces wines with great intensity and depth, qualities that define the world's finest wines. For four decades Chappellet wines have received high praise from wine critics and have been sought after by the world's premier collectors.

Good Karma, Good Wine

Samsara is a Sanskrit word meaning the eternal cycle of life. The world we live in now. One of passion, oneness and harmony. This idea is key to the philosophy of Chad and Mary Melville's Samsara wines.

"Farming is a metaphor for many of life's most important lessons. Though it is our propensity as humans to do so, farming teaches us that there are elements occurring in nature that are far beyond our control. After I apply my knowledge and passion to the vineyard, I must then surrender my efforts to a causality about which I have little say. Within this struggle, the lesson of humility is learned."

They truly believe that they are winegrowers, not winemakers - that is, that all of the important work is done in the vineyard and there is little handling or manipulation once the fruit reaches the winery.

Light, bright red. Fresh strawberry and black raspberry aromas are complicated by baking spices and fresh rose. Racy red berry flavors are light in body and impressively precise, with fine-grained tannins adding structure. The spiciness builds through the long, tangy finish, which strongly echoes the strawberry note.

Light, bright yellow. Smoky pear and pineapple aromas are complicated by lees and quinine. The smoky quality carries onto the palate, joining round orchard and tropical fruit flavors and bitter lime pith. Spicy minerals emerge on the close of this solid value in chardonnay.

The Domaine Saint Prefert Chateauneuf du Pape Auguste Favier was the highest rated 2006 Chateaueneuf du Pape $60 or under along with one other wine. Regularly $60 and our price is $39.99!

The 2006 Domaine Saint Prefert Chateauneuf du Pape Auguste Favier is made from 40- to 100-year-old Grenache vines (about 80% of the cuvee), and the balance Cinsault and Syrah, with the Grenache again aged in tank, and the other varietals aged in small barrels.

Saint Prefert, the Product of Passion and Know How

In the 1920's, Mr. Fernand Serre, a pharmacist in Avignon, discovered that a small piece of vineyard in Chateauneuf-du Pape bore his name: the Serres area. As a respectful winelover, he purchased about 80 hectares of vines, at the southern tip of the village of Chateauneuf.

Mr. Serre had been secretly dreaming for years of becoming a vintner. He quickly built the winery and learned winemaking techniques. Mr. Serre was one of the first winters in Chateauneuf to bottle his own wine. Today, Isabel Ferrando perpetuates this know-how and passion for wine growing.

All the grape varieties used are vinified separately. Grenache and Cinsault bring warmth, colour and body. Mauvedre and Syrah offer structure and ageing potential. Counoise and Picpoul enhance vinosity and freshness. All of Saint Prefert's wines are estate bottled.

As Robert Parker says "Ever since winemaker Isabel Ferrando released her fabulous 2003s, this superb estate has become one of my favorite estates in Chateauneuf du Pape. Located in the Serres quarter of the appellation, where the football-sized rocks are especially noticeable, all one has to do is taste the 2003 Charles Giraud from Saint-Prefert to realize what exceptional heights can be reached. If you haven't discovered Saint-Prefert and the brilliant winemaker Isabel Ferrando, it's about time!"

Wine Spectator 94 Points

Sleek and pure, with superb concentration to the fig, currant paste and mocha notes, all balanced by black licorice and mineral notes that extend through the finish, which echoes with sweet tobacco, hoisin sauce and ganache, boding well for cellaring. Best from 2009 through 2028. 830 cases made. -JM

Robert Parker 91 Points

The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Auguste Favier will probably be a blend of approximately 80% Grenache (from 40 to 100-year old vines) and the balance Cinsault and Syrah. It exhibits a deep ruby hue along with a stunning nose of sweet raspberry and cherry fruit, melted tar, and a touch of licorice. Full-bodied, soft, ripe, voluptuous, lush, and silky-textured, it should drink beautifully for 10-15 years.
