Recent Releases on 2009 Bordeaux Futures at Gary's Wine and Marketplace NJ Wine Store

We traveled to Bordeaux for the annual "en primeur" tastings, and after sampling some 500+ barrel samples we feel confident in saying that there are many great wines. While there are some wines which didn't rise up to quality we expect, there are lots of tremendous wines in every appellation and price level. Our selections are based on what we tasted, choosing only the best in every region and price range to offer our customers.

Here are five new offerings including four tremendous values falling under $35 per bottle and then one extremely limited and highly rated Pomerol from the Moueix stable (owners of Petrus).

2009 Chateau Haut Bergey Rouge
Size: 750 ml
Ratings: RP 92-94
Review: One of the best over-achieving, value-priced wines in Pessac-Leognan, Haut-Bergey's vineyard enjoys a superb location near Malartic-Lagraviere and Domaine de Chevalier. Composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest primarily Cabernet Franc and a dollop of Petit Verdot, the opaque purple-hued 2009 reveals a big, exuberant nose of charcoal, black currants, sweet cherries, and graphite. Dense and full-bodied, with beautiful purity, texture, and length, it should drink well for 20+ years. (Tasted two times.) P.S. I also tasted the brilliant 2000 Haut-Bergey in March, 2010, and it was still a youngster in terms of its development. Drink 2010-2030.
Price: $31.99
Reg: $40.00
ON SALE!

2009 Chateau Providence Pomerol
Size: 750 ml
Ratings: WS 95-98
Review: Offers fabulous aromas of crushed blackberry and blueberry, with lightly roasted coffee bean and black olive. Full-bodied, delivering polished, chewy tannins and a long, juicy finish. Rich and powerful. Blockbuster. Roasted fruit on this. Best ever from here? -J.S.
Price: $114.99

Recently we've heard more and more of our guests asking for more high-end Portuguese wines.

We were happy to hear this, because though our Portuguese wine section offers some great values, there are some really phenomenal wines being made at the high end as well!

Quinto do Vallado is certainly one of these, heralded by many as the "new legacy of Douro." Produced by a family that's been making wine in the Douro Valley for six generations, their Reserva Red is made largely from 60+ year-old vines, and just received a 96 point score from the Wine Spectator.

Not often do we see a 96 point wine with a $47.98 price tag ... thank you Portugal!

Wine Spectator 96 points
Rich, powerful and finely crafted, with layers of concentrated red plum, currant, blueberry and kirsch flavors. Silky tannins knit it seamlessly together. The elegant and refined finish is filled with mineral, smoke and spice. Drink now through 2016. 2,056 cases made.–KM

This was just too good an opportunity to pass up. This amazing deal on the Mercer Chardonnay was originally intended for a large airline company. In the end, they decided to only take half of the deal, and that's when we were approached. We tasted the wine and didn't hesitate at all; the 2007 Mercer Chardonnay from Columbia Valley was absolutely delicious. Some subtle green apple mixed in with some citrus and fresh acidity on the finish. In short, a very crisp style that drinks deliciously.

Most of the juice, 88%, was fermented in French oak barrels and left on the yeast lees for 8 months. Occasional stirring of the lees released yeast-bound flavor and body enriching compounds back into the wine. A portion of the wine, 12%, was fermented in stainless steel tanks to retain the fresh bright fruit of Chardonnay and then blended back with the barrel portions.

Winemaker's Notes:
Very pleasant, relatively light, showing a pretty mix of citrus and tropical fruit, fresh cream, light toast and a hint of cinnamon. The alcohol rests at 14.1% but feels a bit lighter, and the wine has a pleasing ripeness without becoming fat or heavy.

Jay Miller Wine Advocate 87 Points
The 2007 Chardonnay delivers aromas of green apple, pear, and white peach. Dry, ripe, and fruity, it will provide pleasure for another 2-3 years.

RP 96pt Blockbuster Wine Drinking Great Now and For Decades to Come!
$1.00/Btl Shipping on 6-packs | Free Shipping on Cases

English critic and Master of Wine Jancis Robinson, rated it 19 out of 20 which was her highest rating for a 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape and it was the very same rating she gave the Chateau de Beaucastel Homage a Jacques Perrin which sells for almost $600 a bottle!

This is truly a blockbuster wine and it's a unique opportunity for you to get your hands on a few bottles.

The 2007 La Ferme Du Mont Chateauneuf du Pape Cotes Capelan is one of the best kept secrets from the 2007 vintage in Chateauneuf du Pape! The importer is Peter Weygandt, widely known for having one of the best Rhone portfolios which includes Charvin, Raymond Usseglio, and Clos St Jean just to name a few.

Top wine critic Robert Parker gave it 96 points and a stellar review (see below) ... don't pass this opportunity up!

Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate 90 points

The dense ruby/purple-colored, full-bodied 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cotes Capelan is an outrageously rich, complex wine exhibiting beautiful creme de cassis, kirsch, licorice, forest floor, and spring flower-like aromas. It is fresh, voluptuous, and opulent in the mouth, but the fresh acids and vibrancy give it exceptional precision as well as a refreshing style despite its weight, richness, and length. This is a superb, young Chateauneuf du Pape from an up-and-coming star of the appellation. Give it 1-3 years of bottle age and drink it over the following two decades.

Buy Wine 2007 Larkmead Cabernet Sauvignon at Gary's Wine and Marketplace NJ Wine Store

Category: California
Size: 750 ml
Brand: Larkmead Vineyards
Region: Napa Valley
Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon
Style: Red Wine
Price: $59.99
Reg: $74.99
ON SALE!

Larkmead has been an integral part of Napa Valley's history since the late 19th Century. Larkmead was one of the four great Napa Valley wineries before prohibition.

After a period from the 50's to the 80's where no wine was made, Larkmead began making wine again in the 90's. Larkmead is now embarking on its third century of crafting 100% Estate grown, 100% Napa Valley wines. The vineyard is also are the source of fruit for numerous other Napa Valley stars.

Their vision today is in the tradition of the founders of Larkmead- to create consistently excellent wines from their Estate - wines that are a true expression of place.

Winemaker's Notes:

Deep ruby red-purple color. Unmistakable Larkmead aromatic profile of dusky cola, wild herbs, minerals and ripe dark fruit, with a complex, perfumed violet side note. The palate is immediately dark, rich and multi-layered with Larkmead menthol-mineral flavors, graphite, cedar and dusty cocoa powder notes. Concentrated dark fruit dominates as the palate expands but the wine remains lively, juicy and focused throughout. The tannins are long, youthful and satisfying and bring richness and length to the palate, which finishes with a whiff of pepper and aromatic thyme.

Reviews

Robert Parker 94+ Points

Composed of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot, and 1% Cabernet Franc, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (nearly 4,000 cases produced) is a great buy for a world-class Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. It exhibits a dense purple color, notes of charcoal, creme de cassis, graphite, and forest floor, and a ripe, opulently fruity, rich, full-bodied style. Its endearing silkiness, multi-dimensions, and mature, sweet tannins suggest it has two decades of life ahead of it.

Anne Monticelli, the winemaker and owner of Ilaria Wines has the goal of producing small lot wines that have a sense of place. In sourcing the fruit for her wines, she seeks lots that are expressive of the soil and climate where they are grown, that also are the product of careful viticulture.

Winemaker's Notes:

The exceptional 2007 growing season- a warm dry spring, followed by a mild summer, led up to a heat spike in late August and was followed by more moderate temperatures, allowing for a slow steady harvest- yielded a Cabernet defined by intense and powerful fruit flavors. This dark puple ruby hued wine si full bodied and rich with black fruit tones and spice notes. The first thing to notice is the sweet dark currant and blackberry accented with cocoa. Then there is that hint of toasty oak and elegant fine grained tannins that linger on the finish. Drink it now, but don't be afraid to set it asice until it celebrates its 10th birthday.

Robert Parker 93 Points

The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon (94% Cabernet Sauvignon and rest Petit Verdot) is a limited production cuvee offering a dense opaque purple color, beautiful black currant, charcoal, and smoky aromas, a gracious, elegant, well-balanced style, medium to full body, beautiful concentration, and an endearing texture and length. There is nothing out of place in this supple, already appealing Cabernet. It should last for 15+ years.

2007 Napa Cab from Calistoga under $20
Best vintage since 1997 in our opinion
• The Wine Spectator rated the 2007 vintage 94-96 points
• Robert Parker rated the 2007 vintage 96 points

Robert Parker recently said in an e-letter sent to Erobertparker subscribers, "After spending two weeks tasting in California, I can unequivocally state that 2007 is one of the three top vintages of the decade (the other two being 2001 and 2002, with 2005 not far behind). It is a brilliant vintage across the board for all varietals."

This is a brand new arrival from Angels Landing. We sold out of the Stags Leap Cabernet from them in just a couple of months. Don't miss out on this outstanding Cabernet from the great 2007 vintage at a mere 16.99 per bottle!

From Calistoga fruit, an area made famous by Chateau Montelena. This is a deeply colored Cab with loads of blackberry, currant, and lots of mocha. Very good structure but the tannins are very ripe. This will be a real crowd pleaser for any occasion. It's worth every penny if you're looking for a delicious Napa Cab that won't put a dent in the wallet. An amazing value at $16.99!

Jon Visser, Wine Buyer 4 stars -- Juicy Cali Cab! An amazing value!

• Tanzer 92 point Chardonnay under $25
• "hypothetical blend of Chassagne and Meursault"!

The review from Stephen Tanzer intrigued us. He is generally a more conservative critic when it comes to scores and reviews. So, when he rated this Chardonnay under $30 from South Africa 92 points and called it a "hypothetical blend of Chassagne and Meursault," we had to check out exactly what he was talking about.

We did some research on Tanzer's reviews of Chardonnays that retail under $30. He has reviewed over 1400 Chardonnays from all over the world in this price range and have rated only 38 of them 92 points or higher which included 4 different vintages of the Hamilton Russell Chardonnay including the 2008!

Long story short. We bought everything we could find on the 2008 Hamilton Russell Chardonnay. Buy a bottle so you can be blown away by this amazing South African Chardonnay that drinks more like a cross between a fine White Burgundy and a rich, explosive California chardonnay and at a reasonable price tag of $23.99!

Wine Spectator 90 Points

Ripe and stylish, with melon, ginger, yellow apple and pear flavors that glide over well-embedded acidity. There's a lingering whiff of grilled hazelnut on the rich finish. Not quite as dense as the 2007, but still outstanding. Drink now through 2010. 4,880 cases made.–JM

International Wine Cellar 92 Points

Bright yellow with a golden tinge; much lighter than the 2007. Sexy, highly nuanced nose combines white peach, pineapple, iodiney minerality, musky ginger and leesy nuances, all lifted by a floral topnote; like a hypothetical blend of Meursault and Chassagne. Densely packed, brisk and deep, with lovely racy acidity and a rocky element giving a light touch and impressive energy to the flavors of citrus and stone fruits, nutmeg and minerals. Finishes very subtle and very long, with excellent grip. This has all the elements to please the Burgundy lover-and all in an understated way.

Buy Wine 2005 Chateau Lucas Cotes de Castillon On Sale at Gary's Wine NJ Wine Store

http://www.garyswine.com/fine_wine/france/12840.html

Free Shipping on a Case and From One of the Best Vintages Ever!

The 2005 vintage in Bordeaux yielded an amazing number of great value wines from chateaux you may never have heard of before. The 2005 vintage was one of those vintages where the quality was outstanding from the petit chateau up to the elite. Our search for value 2005 Bordeaux began back in 2006 and has continued to this day. And we continue to find amazing wines for the money from the vintage.

Our most recent discovery is Chateau Lucas from Cotes de Castillon. Cotes de Castillon is one of the hottest regions in all of Bordeaux mainly because the wines way over-deliver for the price they are sold for now. The region is situated right next to St. Emilion and many of the wines resemble that region.

Some of the labels that have become household names in Cote de Castillon are D'Aiguilhe, Clos les Lunelles, Gigault Cuvee Viva, and Clos l'Eglise. They, of course, all sell for $25 or more now. Chateau Lucas is still under the radar at just $15.99 per bottle.

Jon Visser, French Wine Buyer Tasting Note -- Dark fruit, earth, and minerals on the nose. Lush and round fruit on the palate with plum and blackberry flavors. Some oak flavors that are well-integrated and a long finish with structure and ripe tannins.

The 2006 was the Wine Spectator's highest rated vintage since 1997 for Chianti Classico and Castello di Brolio was the highest rated Chianti Classico from 2006 being rated # 5 wine in their Top 100 list of 2009!

The grapes for Barone Ricasoli's Castello di Brolio come from the best part of Brolio in Chianti. It is produced from primarily Sangiovese with a little Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blended in. Aged 18 months in barrique barrels. The resulting wine is extraordinarily balanced, concentrated, complex, and beautifully textured.

This is truly an exceptional bottle of wine. One of the benchmark wines from Chianti Classico. The Wine Spectator obviously thinks that's the case with the 2006. It was their highest rated Chianti Classico from 2006, the best vintage in their eyes since the 1997 for the region. They also made this wine the highest ranked Italian wine in their Top 100 list for 2009 at # 5!.

Wine Spectator 96 points & # 5 in WS Top 100 of 2009: Shows amazing aromas of blackberry, with hints of vanilla and flowers, along with black licorice and crushed berries. Full-bodied, with wonderfully caressing, ultrafine tannins. Very balanced and long.

Buy Wine 2007 Losada Bierzo On Sale at Gary's Wine NJ Wine Store

http://www.garyswine.com/fine_wine/spain/12324.html

2007 Losada Bierzo -- Free Shipping on a 6-pack

The region of Bierzo produces high quality wines that show a great balance between purity of fruit and terroir.

Bierzo is situated in the northwestern portion of Spain in the mountains between Castilla y Leon and Galicia. The prominent grape in Bierzo is Mencia, which has similar aromatics and mouth-feel to that of Pinot Noir - though wines from Bierzo will be a bit more full-bodied than most Pinot Noir that sell in the same price range.

This wine is a great find and we highly recommend it - see reviews below.

Jay Miller Wine Advocate 90 Points -- Losada is produced from 50- to 80-year-old hillside vines in Bierzo and aged for nine months in new French oak. Purple in color with a nose of mineral, roasted herbs, game, and floral aromas, this extracted, rich,full-flavored wine over-delivers in a big way. It should evolve for 1-2 years and drink well through 2015 but it can be enjoyed now.

International Wine Cellar 90 Points -- Deep, vivid ruby. Aromas of blackberry, cola and spicy dark chocolate. Tactile, dense and sweet but with a light touch, showing good energy to its dark berry, spice and licorice flavors. The finish features livelier red berry character and leaves notes of candied licorice and cola behind.

Buy Wine 2004 Brunello di Montalcino On Sale at Gary's Wine NJ Wine Store

http://www.garyswine.com/fine_wine/italy/10029.html

2004 Collelceto Brunello di Montalcino -- Free Shipping on a 6-pack

Just arrived to our special temperature controlled room -- 93 points Wine Advocate and lowest price in the country at $39.99!

When we tasted Brunellos in preparation for our buy earlier this year, one that really caught our attention was the 2004 Collelceto Brunello.

We thought the 2004 Collelceto best displayed the balance of fruit and tannins that is one of the best qualities of the vintage. Needless to say, we stocked up, purchasing every case we could get our hands on. And when the scores came out, our intuition proved right. The Collelceto came away with a 93 point score from Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate.

From Family Farm to First Rank Winery

Collelceto was a traditionally run farm operation just a few years ago, but has now been taken over by the dynamic Elia Palazzesi, who with the help of enologist Lorenzo Landi, has realized this small farms full potential in the form of a full fledged winery. After only few years of bottling under their own label the Palazzesi family today already belongs to the exclusive club of respected and reliable winemakers of Montalcino.

Collelcto is located in the southwestern part of Montalcino, producing a Brunello with plenty of chocolate driven tannins and age worthiness. Full-bodied and spicy wines are produced from their 15 acres of perfectly exposed vineyards. Collelceto Brunello is designed for long cellaring, making one of the finest expressions of Sangiovese crafted today from what used to be a simple family farm.

Reviews

Wine Advocate 93 Points

The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino reveals superior clarity and delineation in its black cherries, violets, licorice, spices and new leather in a style that artfully balances a very ripe expression of fruit with firm structure. This vibrant Brunello offers terrific length and compelling inner perfume that never trails off. The tannins build on the finish, so a few additional years of bottle age seem prudent. This is a superb effort from proprietor Elia Palazzesi and may very well be his finest wine yet. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.

Wine Spectator 91 Points

Aromas of mushrooms, plums and berries follow through to a full body, with soft, yet chewy tannins and a ripe fruit aftertaste. A juicy wine. Some more bottle age will chill this out. Best after 2010. 800 cases made. -JS
