When we tasted Brunellos in preparation for our buy earlier this year, one that really caught our attention was the 2004 Collelceto Brunello.

We thought the 2004 Collelceto best displayed the balance of fruit and tannins that is one of the best qualities of the vintage. Needless to say, we stocked up, purchasing every case we could get our hands on. And when the scores came out, our intuition proved right. The Collelceto came away with a 93 point score from Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate.

From Family Farm to First Rank Winery

Collelceto was a traditionally run farm operation just a few years ago, but has now been taken over by the dynamic Elia Palazzesi, who with the help of enologist Lorenzo Landi, has realized this small farms full potential in the form of a full fledged winery. After only few years of bottling under their own label the Palazzesi family today already belongs to the exclusive club of respected and reliable winemakers of Montalcino.

Collelcto is located in the southwestern part of Montalcino, producing a Brunello with plenty of chocolate driven tannins and age worthiness. Full-bodied and spicy wines are produced from their 15 acres of perfectly exposed vineyards. Collelceto Brunello is designed for long cellaring, making one of the finest expressions of Sangiovese crafted today from what used to be a simple family farm.

Reviews

Wine Advocate 93 Points

The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino reveals superior clarity and delineation in its black cherries, violets, licorice, spices and new leather in a style that artfully balances a very ripe expression of fruit with firm structure. This vibrant Brunello offers terrific length and compelling inner perfume that never trails off. The tannins build on the finish, so a few additional years of bottle age seem prudent. This is a superb effort from proprietor Elia Palazzesi and may very well be his finest wine yet. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.

Wine Spectator 91 Points

Aromas of mushrooms, plums and berries follow through to a full body, with soft, yet chewy tannins and a ripe fruit aftertaste. A juicy wine. Some more bottle age will chill this out. Best after 2010. 800 cases made. -JS
