Brothers Hector and Pablo Durigutti are two of the most highly-renowned winemaking consultants in Argentina, helping to craft wines for Altos Las Hormigas, Renacer, Rutini and Alberti 154. After establishing themselves with these wineries and the growers that supply them, the duo decided to take on a pet project of their own. The Durigutti line is a family project of ultra-premium...dare we say "boutique"...wines. And there's nothing these siblings do better than the grape that got them where they are today: Malbec.

Durigutti Malbec Classico 2007 is a 100% Malbec that should be considered a benchmark for the grape at this accessible price. Deep ruby color with tinges of that characteristic "Malbec Magenta," this wine carries intriguing aromas of cigar and wild strawberry, nice raspberry fruit, good acidity, and a long, slightly chocolate-coated finish.

Wine Spectator 90 Points

Quite ripe and toasty, with a hefty dose of mocha and coffee laid over the fleshy dark plum, currant and blackberry fruit. Stays toasty through the finish, but this is well-integrated, with the fruit an equal match. Drink now through 2010. 5,800 cases made.–JM

Clos du Mont Olivet- The Keepers of the Flame of Tradition

The wines of Clos du Mont Olivet, which traces its history back to 1547, are among the finest of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Run by the esteemed Sabon family, Clos du Mont-Olivet is made in a super-traditional style: no destemming of grapes, crushing and fermenting in concrete vats, and aging in large foudres.

The Sabons fashion complex Chateauneuf-du-Pape that combines the fruit intensity and alcoholic strength of Grenache with a slight and appealing hint of rusticity. Since 1989, the Sabons have employed neither fining nor filtration, in order to enhance the expression of rich fruit flavors and subtle terroir influences. The wines are composed predominantly of Grenache (usually around 80%), with Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault completing the blend. The vines of this 60 acre estate average over 60 years old.

Robert Parker describes Clos du Mont Olivet as "...one of the archconservative bastions of traditionalism in Chateauneuf du Pape, these are classic old-style Chateauneuf du Papes bursting at the seams with sweet cherry notes, roasted Provencal herbs, licorice, and resiny, loamy, earthy scents."

Silky, but with solid grip in the background, holding the fig, currant and blackberry fruit at bay, while roasted sage, tobacco and spice notes flitter throughout. Has a very silky, pure finish. Drink now through 2026. 4,830 cases made. -JM

Robert Parker 94 Points

The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape, a big time sleeper of the vintage, is well-worth buying. The finest traditional Chateauneuf produced at Mas de Boislauzon, it boasts a saturated ruby/purple color as well as a spectacular nose of licorice, black raspberries, black cherries, and lavender, and an exquisitely full-bodied, multidimensional and layered wine with not a hard edge to be found. Tremendous depth, beautiful freshness, and admirable purity suggest this 2007 will evolve for 12+ years. Readers should move quickly to secure some of this fabulous bargain.

Wine Spectator 91 Points

Dark and alluring, with fig, cocoa powder and coffee notes up front, followed by a large core of dark fig and mulled currant fruit. A dash of espresso helps fill out the muscular finish. Best from 2010 through 2025. 3,000 cases made.–JM

5 Centuries of Experience Make Great Wine

For over 500 years, the Baroncini family have been growing grapes and olives in the hilltop Tuscan village of San Gimignano. But it is only in the last 50 years that the family has begun making wine, and has expanded their horizons beyond their walled medieval village.

On the site of an ancient Etruscan village, the family has established Poggio Il Castellare. Near the hamlet of Castelnuove dell Abate, in the heart of the production zone of Brunello di Montalcino they are now a rising star in Montalcino.

Their 2004 is a breakthrough wine, both in being the highest quality they have ever produced, and in garnering the raves of the critics that certify their up and coming status.

The Wine Spectator released their much anticipated Top 100 list of 2009 this morning. And at # 11 in the list, the 2004 Poggio Il Castellare Brunello di Montalcino was the highest ranked Brunello from the exceptional 2004 vintage.

Wine Spectator 96 points & # 11 in Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2009

Dried dark fruit on the nose, verging on date and prune. Full-bodied, with a dense palate of ripe fruit and supersilky tannins. This is a deep and beautiful red, delivering lots of subtle character. Fascinating. One of the undiscovered treasures of the vintage. Best after 2011. 2,000 cases made.

The verdict is in: The 2008 vintage in Bordeaux is yet another great vintage. And the best part is that prices have actually come down despite the high quality!

Robert Parker on the 2008 vintage, "..The 2008 vintage turned out to be excellent, with a number of superb wines that are close to, if not equal to the prodigious 2005 or 2000 vintages.."

The Chateau La Chapelle Maillard is our first 2008 Bordeaux to arrive in the stores. A Gold Medal Winner and it's under $15. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc.

This is a well-balanced Bordeaux with nice red fruit character, notes of cassis and chocolate, and a structured, toasty oak-inflected finish. Well done for under $15.
