New World vs Old World: Two Great Wines From Chile and Spain

chile_vs_spainLG.jpg

2006 Vina Perez Cruz Carmenere Reserva Limited Edition - Even better is the 2006 Carmenere Reserva Limited Edition, a deep crimson-colored wine with a superb aromatic array of scorched earth, pencil lead, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. On the palate spice, plum and chocolate notes emerge followed by a lengthy, fruit-filled, pure finish. It is an exceptional value in Carmenere.

2005 Castano Solanera Vinas Viejas - Saturated purple. Smoky raspberry and cherry on the nose, with a nice mocha quality adding complexity. Fleshy, round dark fruit liqueur flavors caress rather than pummel the palate. Gentle tannins arrive late to add structure but this is all about silky, juicy fruit.

WA 97pt Ornellaia Is Here With Free Shipping on Six Bottles - 2006 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Ornellaia

2006 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Ornellaia

If ever there was a week for Bordeaux-lovers to consider an affair with a different appellation, this is it. The prices for 2008 First Growth Bordeaux were released last week; they're being sold for about $200 a bottle on Futures. The wines are in barrel and won't be released until 2011 and the vintage is.. average. At the same time, the 2006 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia has been released. The price is $139.99 per bottle, the wine is in the store tomorrow, and the vintage is exceptional, scored 97 points by the Wine Advocate. Who knows what the Wine Spectator will give it when their ratings come out? Needless to say, we passed on the 2008 First Growths and instead invested in the 2006 Ornellaia. An easy choice, even for our Francophile French Wine Buyer, and an easy choice for you. Change is good. Embrace it.

A Bordeaux Blend From Italy with First Growth Quality!

Wine Advocate 97 points :
The 2006 Ornellaia flows from the glass in a profound expression of ripe, dark fruit. With time in the glass layers of minerals, cassis, tar, sweet herbs and French oak emerge, adding further complexity. This harmonious Ornellaia combines the richness of the vintage with superb freshness and awesome balance. Today the wine's sheer density almost manages to hide the tannins, but they are there, and the wine will ultimately benefit from a few years in the cellar. The 2006 Ornellaia is one of the highlights of this sensational Tuscan vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2026.

Our South American buyer has been on the prowl for the new cutting edge wines coming out of South America. It paid dividends recently when she discovered the wines from Vina Perez Cruz in Chile. The wines were outrageous to say the least. We brought them in basically the next day after tasting them. The Carmenere Reserva Limited Edition was the standout QPR of the three wines we brought in.

We're one of the only retailers to discover this wine but the critics have as well. Take a look at just some of the accolades for the Vina Perez Cruz Carmenere. In the Quarterly Review of Wines, Rosemary George MW singled out Perez Cruz as one of the best cutting-edge producers delivering top quality wines in Chile. A Silver Medal winner at the 5th Annual Wines of Chile Awards. And most recently, a 90 point score from Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate with a glowing tasting note which is below.

NZ Pinot Noir Under $20 That Beat Out 90 Others In A Competition - 2008 Martinborough Te Tera Pinot Noir

2008 Martinborough Te Tera Pinot Noir Marlborough
--Free Shipping on Six Bottles or More--
Price: $19.99
Reg: $25.99
ON SALE!

We discovered one of the hottest Pinot Noirs from New Zealand. The 2007 vintage of the Martinborough Te Tera Pinot Noir beat out 90 other Pinot Noirs at various price ranges to become the Champion Pinot Noir at one of the biggest competitions in New Zealand. The judges for the competition were all Masters of Wine.

The 2008 was just released and we took in our first shot of the wine with 100 cases arriving only a couple of weeks ago. The 2008 vintage in New Zealand has been called exceptional for Pinot Noir and probably a better vintage than the 2007. The winery sells this wine for $28.80. Gary's price is $19.99!

From 27 year old vines. The nose is bursting with dark plum and spicy notes. Big and round with plum, berry, and some cherry. A wine with great depth and concentration with a long finish. And the wine gets better and better once it's been opened. Tasted it three times over a couple hours.

We're all waiting in anticipation for the 2007 Chateauneuf du Papes to arrive. Heck, we're waiting for all 2007 Southern Rhones to arrive whether it's a Cote du Rhone, Vacqueyras, or Gigondas. But, we also are starting to see some interesting offers on 2005 and 2006 Chateauneuf du Papes. We've passed on many but here's one that we could not resist. A great producer of Chateauneuf du Pape and to be able to sell it at just $29.99! We had to grab some of this and pass the savings on down to our customers. This is just a great $30 bottle of wine that will easily age for 5-10 years if you wanted to wait that long. Enjoy!

Here's what Robert Parker said of Domaine de Beaurenard,

"Domaine de Beaurenard is a consistent estate that has been making top-notch wines for as long as I have been writing about wine, which is now 28+ years."

Wine Spectator 92 Points

This has lots of juicy grip, with a strong, briary undertow supporting red and black licorice, hot stone, currant paste, tobacco and chestnut notes. The long, muscular finish is typical of the vintage. Best from 2010 through 2025. 100 cases imported.

Extra juice from a well known Oakville winery whose Cabernet sells for $80 a bottle! Gary's Price - $34.99

OUR LATEST RELEASE FROM THE GF PRIVATE LABEL SERIES: Gary's Own 2005 Go Figure Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon Lot 3

For the Go Figure series, we've begun sourcing wines crafted by the industry-leading winemakers who had a little extra left over from their own bottling. The result is stellar wine hand-selected by Gary and sold to our friends at a significantly lower price than at the winery itself. We can't tell you whose juice it is, or who made it..but we can tell you we lucked out in finding it!

2005 GF Go Figure Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon Lot 3
If amazing deals on juice like this are a sign of the times, then viva la recession, friends! The 2005 vintage brought a little more quality Cabernet fruit than this Oakville winery was prepared to bottle under their own flagship label, so we were more than happy to swoop in and bottle the rest as our third exclusive bottling under the Go Figure label. Sourced from fifty-five acres of some of the most tightly spaced vines in California on some of the reddest, rockiest soil in Oakville, this wine is made from an impeccably-researched combination of the best clones from California and Bordeaux. A mild summer and fall in the 2005 vintage allowed for extensive hang-time and flavor development in the grapes without excessive sugar development. The result was classic cassis and rich red and black fruits on a rich palate. Look for bright red cherry and raspberry on the nose, along with a little cinnamon, allspice, and pine. A velvety mouthfeel shows just the right richness without being cloying, and solid structure and tannins make for a medium to long finish with a good dose of warm spice at the end.

GARY'S PRICE - $17.99

There's obviously plenty of reasons to buy this Chardonnay from the Russian River Valley. But, the most important reason to buy this is the quality of the wine. We hand-selected this wine in California tasting it against many more expensive and familiar Chardonnays from Sonoma and Napa. The Sevona was a big, rich California Chardonnay but the difference was that this had a little more balance on the finish with some minerality and structure.

And you're getting the extra savings from us bringing it in without the fancy marketing costs and the extra margins that would come with a wine of this quality if a big supplier were to come across it.

"Why have so many elite Napa and Sonoma Pinot Noir producers-Williams Selyem, Copain and Adrian Fog, to name just a few-begun buying grapes from the vineyards of Mendocino, California's obscure Anderson Valley? In fact, interest from outsiders has inspired growers to plant Pinot at a furious rate. In just the past 10 years, Anderson Valley Pinot Noir acreage has more than tripled: from 350 acres to about 1,200....the Anderson Valley may be one of the best places in California to grow Pinot Noir. Duckhorn Pinot under $30!
Lowest price in the country
FREE SHIPPING on a six pack

Migration Pinot Noir comes from the same vineyards as the highly rated and regarded Goldeneye Pinot Noir in Anderson Valley, the sister label of Napa's Duckhorn. Migration is not that far off from the quality Goldeneye and yet it sells for $20 a bottle less.

Anderson Valley is quickly becoming known in the wine trade for producing some of the best cool climate Pinot Noir in all of California. To us, "cool climate Pinot Noir" means that the wine will have good clean fruit, nice acidity, and lower alcohol. And perhaps most importantly, well-made cool climate Pinot makes for a great food Pinot.

This wine was chosen for our April Wine Club, which is focused on "Green" wines in celebration of Earth Day. Pick up a bottle before April 22nd and give a nod to a sustainable winery that will keep our vineyards healthy for generations of winelovers to come!

Wine Club Review:

If you're going to create an entire winery based around one species of wildlife, then it's only fair to say you've got to be wildlife supporters in the long haul. The folks at Duckhorn (who create varietal wines under the Duckhorn, Paraduxx, Goldeneye, and Migration labels), have just such a commitment through their sustainable winemaking practices and Napa Green Certification (a program that ensures that the soil, wildlife, and water are conserved on and around their vineyard properties.) Migration Pinot Noir is the sister label of Goldeneye, and is produced entirely of Anderson Valley Pinot Noir. Choosing from a veritable palate of 22 clonal varieties in 23 separate vineyard blocks, winemaker Zach Rasmuson crafted a wine in the 2005 vintage that carries a nose of earth and cherry, a palate full of delicious cherry fruit, and a silky finish with notes of forest floor. Drinks beautifully now, and should continue to do so through 2010/2011.

Wine Spectator 89 points
Rich and savory, with a cherry cola-sassafras aroma that spills over to the palate, giving it a distinctive flavor profile. Finishes with a long, complex, fruity aftertaste, with a hint of mineral. 89 points

We tasted the Clos des Jacobins at our Bordeaux tasting back in September and the wine showed beautifully. Our Bordeaux buyer liked the wine so much that he didn't think we should offer such a low price for a wine of this quality. But, we convinced him to budge on the price since we still have 15 cases in stock. And we need to move some Bordeaux to make room for more 05 and 06 Bordeaux that will be arriving soon.

A great offer on a highly rated 2005 Bordeaux!

Wine Spectator 94 points
Dark in color, almost black. Aromas of raisin, spices and blackberry follow through to a full body, with chewy tannins and a long, powerful finish. Has loads of fruit and toasty oak. This is exciting. A new 1947? Best after 2016. 2,415 cases made.

In this economic climate, there are tons of opportunities being presented to us every day. But to be honest, we've been passing on many: not because the prices weren't attractive, but because the quality for the price just didn't wow us. Recently, we even passed on a Wine Spectator 92 point Syrah for under $20.

That said, here's one of the offers that we could not pass up: a Tuscan red from one of the top producers in all of Tuscany, Tua Rita, at over 40% off its regular price. An amazing savings for a Tua Rita wine that earned a 100 point score in the 2000 vintage.

Wine Spectator 92 points
Very ripe fruit aromas of currant and mineral, with a hint of mint. Full-bodied, with beautiful tannins and a balance of fruit that is wonderful. Class and refinement. You don't have to spend a fortune to drink excellent Tua Rita. Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best after 2009. 1,500 cases made. –JS
