“The 2008 The Griffin is something new, an homage to Ireland consisting of 42% Petite Sirah, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Charbono, and 8% Merlot. Beautiful black raspberry, blueberry, spicy, peppery fruit jump from the glass of this dense purple wine. Foley has somehow built considerable sweet tannin into the full-bodied, fleshy mouthfeel. This is something California needs to do more of – creative blends that are loaded with personality and soul. This wine is part Rhone Ranger and part classic Napa Cabernet. Drink it over the next decade. “

2007 Vina Alicia Malbec Las Compuertas - Wine Advocate 93 Points

“The 2007 Malbec, sourced from ungrafted vines with an average age of over 100 years. It was aged for 12 months in new French oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it displays a brooding nose of wood smoke, graphite, spice box, black cherry, and plum. Medium- to full-bodied, dense opulent, and rich on the palate, it has incipient complexity, superb grip and concentration, and a lengthy finish. It will benefit from 3-4 years of additional cellaring and offer prime drinking from 2012 to 2022.”

Jay Miller, Wine Advocate 93 points -- The first release, the 2007 QED is made up of 94% Syrah, 3% Grenache, and 3% Mourvedre sourced from several top vineyards. It was aged in 25% new French oak. Dark ruby-colored, it offers up a classy nose of pepper, mineral, smoked meat, game, spice box, and blueberry. This leads to a mouth-filling, intense, super-concentrated, opulent wine that has enough underlying structure to evolve for 3-4 years. It will deliver much pleasure through 2022 if not longer. This is a very fine debut indeed!

The 2007 Montes Purple Angel is dark, almost black, in color. Ultra rich and super-concentrated. Blackberry, cassis, and some really nice spiciness that you find in Carmenere. Very ripe Carmenere as well. Even though it sees 18 months in oak, it is not overly oaked, and the oak is integrated beautifully. Amazingly balanced and a long finish with sweet fruit.

Wine Spectator 94 Points -- The 2007 Purple Angel is a blend of Carmenere and Petit Verdot that might be the only competition for Terrunyo's Carmin de Peumo for top Carmenere-based wine in Chile . In 2010 the Wine Spectator's highest rated Spanish red under $25 was the 2004 Vina Mayor Reserva. The second highest, only missing by one point, was the 92 point 2006 Pittacum Bierzo. We've tasted both and, to be honest, this may be the better wine.
