In 2010 the Wine Spectator's highest rated Spanish red under $25 was the 2004 Vina Mayor Reserva. The second highest, only missing by one point, was the 92 point 2006 Pittacum Bierzo. We've tasted both and, to be honest, this may be the better wine.
Bierzo doesn't get the same attention as wines from better known regions like Rioja and Ribera del Duero. 9 out of 10 people would select a Rioja or Ribera del Duero before they would try a Bierzo. After tasting the 2006 Pittacum Bierzo, though, that proportion would change in a hurry.
The Wine Spectator certainly realized that, scoring the Pittacum higher than 58 out of 60 Ribera del Dueros and all 70 Riojas they rated during 2010 in the $15-30 price range!
