Case in point. We recently tasted the 2008 Domaine Zind Humbrecht Pinot Blanc. It was outstanding. Loads of white fruits, great complexity, freshness, and good acidity. The fruit is sourced from two of Zind Humbrecht’s finest vineyards, Herrenweg and Rotenberg.

Even though the label says Pinot Blanc, it is actually a blend of 70% Auxerrois and 30% Pinot Blanc. The laws in Alsace allow them to bottle it either way, but any way you label it, the wine is delicious.

Wine Spectator 91 Points -- The smell of the sea winds through this full-bodied Pinot Blanc. “The 2008 The Griffin is something new, an homage to Ireland consisting of 42% Petite Sirah, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Charbono, and 8% Merlot. Beautiful black raspberry, blueberry, spicy, peppery fruit jump from the glass of this dense purple wine. Foley has somehow built considerable sweet tannin into the full-bodied, fleshy mouthfeel. This is something California needs to do more of – creative blends that are loaded with personality and soul. This wine is part Rhone Ranger and part classic Napa Cabernet. Drink it over the next decade. “

“The 2007 Malbec, sourced from ungrafted vines with an average age of over 100 years. It was aged for 12 months in new French oak. Jay Miller, Wine Advocate 93 points -- The first release, the 2007 QED is made up of 94% Syrah, 3% Grenache, and 3% Mourvedre sourced from several top vineyards. It was aged in 25% new French oak. Dark ruby-colored, it offers up a classy nose of pepper, mineral, smoked meat, game, spice box, and blueberry. This leads to a mouth-filling, intense, super-concentrated, opulent wine that has enough underlying structure to evolve for 3-4 years. It will deliver much pleasure through 2022 if not longer. This is a very fine debut indeed!
