2008 Chateau Canon La Gaffeliere

In our view, Chateau Canon La Gaffeliere is fast becoming the most consistent Chateau in all of St Emilion.
2008 Canon La Gaffeliere received great barrel tasting scores, and now the scores from tastings of the now bottled wine are starting to come out, and they’re even higher! Neal Martin rated it 94 (Barrel score 91-93), the Wine Spectator rated it 93 (Barrel score 89-92), and Robert Parker is coming out with his score next week (Barrel score 91-93). It looks like it has developed beautifully since the barrel tastings. Where will Parker rate it?
How does it stack up to the competition in 2008? Neal Martin rated only two 2008 St Emilions higher-- Cheval Blanc and Ausone, which both sell for $500+. Ausone was the only 2008 rated higher than Canon La Gaffeliere in the Wine Spectator!
One of the highest rated 2008 St Emilions for $59.99 per bottle, which is the lowest price found anywhere in the country right now, and just $1 per bottle on shipping for orders of six or more!
Neal Martin's Wine Journal 94 Points-- Tasted at the UGC 2008 tasting in London. The nose races out of the blocks with black cherries, cassis, Hoi sin and a touch of Chinese 5-spice. Good definition-very confident. The palate is medium-bodied with layers of ripe red fruit: redcurrant, pomegranate, a touch of white pepper and very well integrated oak. Great length and sense of dimension here as it fans out across the finish. Superb! Drink 2013-2025+ Tasted October 2010.
Wine Spectator 93 Points-- Dense and ripe, with flashes of Black Mission fig, Turkish coffee and roasted apple wood running through the dense core of plum sauce, black licorice and currant paste. The long finish has ample depth and grip, with a singe of black tea. A very classy wine. Best from 2013 through 2019. 3,580 cases made.-JM
Robert Parker 91-93 Points-- One of the most consistently high quality offerings from both St.-Emilion and Bordeaux, proprietor Stefan von Neipperg, working with consultant Stephane Derenoncourt, always seems to deliver a beautifully opulent, complex claret that can be drunk young or cellared for 15+ years. I recently had the 1998 and 1990 and, although those two vintages are very different in style, both are classic Canon la Gaffelieres in their complexity, opulence, and richness. The 2008, a blend of 55% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, exhibits a big, sweet nose of roasted herbs, sweet black currants and cherries, licorice, incense, and Christmas fruitcake. Deep, concentrated fruit, full-bodied opulence, beautiful purity, sweet tannins, and fresh acids give this wine a stunning precision as well as amazing depth (because of the low yields). It should drink well for 15+ years.
