Our Go Figure Lot 6 comes from the 2008 vintage. 2008 is being widely acclaimed as the best year in Oregon in many years. We first tasted the 2007 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape while were in the Rhone Valley in March of this year. We tasted in the cellars at the Chateau. The wine was spectacular and actually somewhat approachable at the time. Rich and concentrated fruit, beautifuly spice, sweet tannins, and structured with a long, long, long finish. The visit and tasting was one of the highlights of our trip.

We also tasted it again recently at our Grand Tasting in October. We couldn't believe how much better it was now then it was when we first tasted it. The tannins were more integrated into the wine and it displayed an amazing elegance for a young Beaucastel. Jon Visser, our French Wine Buyer, thought it was the best young Beaucastel that he's ever had. Possibly as good as the 1989!

Extremely dense, with layer upon layer of melted fig, mulled boysenberry and black currant fruit, all laced with notes of charred mesquite, hoisin sauce and Kenya AA coffee. The long, silky mouthfeel belies the latent power in reserve-and there's a lot of it, with waves of grip driving the finish. Best from 2010 through 2030.

Beaucastel’s 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape has turned out even better out of bottle than I predicted. An inky/ruby/purple color is followed by a glorious nose of blue and black fruits, truffles, pen ink, licorice, and meat juices as well as glorious levels of acidity and sweet tannin, buttressing the fruit’s fabulous freshness and vibrancy. This full-bodied effort still displays considerable tannin, no doubt because of the relatively high Mourvedre content. It should resolve its tannins in 2-4 years, and last for 25 or more.

At one past midnight on the third Thursday of each November, from little villages and towns like Romaneche-Thorins, over a million cases of Beaujolais Nouveau begin their journey through a sleeping France to Paris for immediate shipment to all parts of the world. Banners proclaim the good news: Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrive! "The New Beaujolais has arrived!"

One of the most frivolous and animated rituals in the wine world has begun.

By the time it is over, over 65 million bottles, nearly half of the region's total annual production, will be distributed and drunk around the world. It has become a worldwide race to be the first to serve to this new wine of the harvest. In doing so, it has been carried by motorcycle, balloon, truck, helicopter, Concorde jet, elephant, runners and rickshaws to get it to its final destination.

It is amazing to realize that just weeks before this wine was a cluster of grapes in a growers vineyard. But by an expeditious harvest, a rapid fermentation, and a speedy bottling, all is ready at the midnight hour. The 2006 Estate Grown Syrah from Stolpman Vineyards for $16.98 is probably the best deal that we've had on a California Syrah in a long time. Only a couple years ago it was selling in most places for $30-35, and it was a good bottle at that price. Now, it's an absolute steal!

We're not the only one who think Stolpman is excellent source for great syrah. Some of the wineries that have sourced fruit from Stolpman include: Sine Qua Non, Ojai Vineyards, and Jaffurs just to name a few.

Stolpman Vineyard is managed by perhaps the most respected precision viticulture team in the Central Coast, Coastal Vineyard Care Associates headed by Jeff Newton, who also manages the much talked about Jonata Wine project located next to Stolpman and owned by the owners of Screaming Eagle with consulting winemaker, Michael Rolland.

Jonata recently received a 98-100 point score for its Syrah from 2007. Stolpman has the same viticulture team and neighbors on Jonata's vineyards. I think you know where we're going with this.

The 2006 Stolpman Syrah is a great wine at a ridiculously low price given its credentials and the quality in the bottle!

Coralie Goumarre- A Woman on a Mission

Proprietor Coralie Goumarre took over Domaine Galevan from her parents in 1995. She is the ninth generation of vignerons at Galevan, but the first woman to head the domaine. She has taken Galevan to the top ranks of southern Rhone producers. Most of her production is Cotes du Rhone (she also has 5 acres of vines in Chateauneuf du Pape) and she makes the most of it. Both of Domaine Galevan’s 2007 Cotes du Rhones are tremendous sleepers of the vintage. Velvety-textured and voluptuous, they are about as good as Cotes du Rhones can be.

The 2005 vintage marks St. Francis' eleventh harvest of Old Vines Zinfandel from the famed Pagani Vineyard. This Old Vine Zinfandel is crafted of fruit from grapevines first planted by family patriarch Felice Pagani on this Sonoma Valley vineyard in the 1880's, and to this day is farmed in the old "field blend" style. The wines of Clos du Mont Olivet, which traces its history back to 1547, are among the finest of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Run by the esteemed Sabon family, Clos du Mont-Olivet is made in a super-traditional style: no destemming of grapes, crushing and fermenting in concrete vats, and aging in large foudres.

The Sabons fashion complex Chateauneuf-du-Pape that combines the fruit intensity and alcoholic strength of Grenache with a slight and appealing hint of rusticity. Since 1989, the Sabons have employed neither fining nor filtration, in order to enhance the expression of rich fruit flavors and subtle terroir influences. The finest traditional Chateauneuf produced at Mas de Boislauzon, it boasts a saturated ruby/purple color as well as a spectacular nose of licorice, black raspberries, black cherries, and lavender, and an exquisitely full-bodied, multidimensional and layered wine with not a hard edge to be found. For over 500 years, the Baroncini family have been growing grapes and olives in the hilltop Tuscan village of San Gimignano. But it is only in the last 50 years that the family has begun making wine, and has expanded their horizons beyond their walled medieval village.

On the site of an ancient Etruscan village, the family has established Poggio Il Castellare. Near the hamlet of Castelnuove dell Abate, in the heart of the production zone of Brunello di Montalcino they are now a rising star in Montalcino.

Their 2004 is a breakthrough wine, both in being the highest quality they have ever produced, and in garnering the raves of the critics that certify their up and coming status.

The Wine Spectator released their much anticipated Top 100 list of 2009 this morning. And at # 11 in the list, the 2004 Poggio Il Castellare Brunello di Montalcino was the highest ranked Brunello from the exceptional 2004 vintage.

Wow, the fruit just leaps from the glass! Black cherry, plum and a bit of dates. Super lush mouth feel, with lots of candied berry fruit and plum flavors. The finish went on and on and was delicious with the chocolate pecan pie and chocolate raspberry cheesecake we had for dessert. This wine will only get better as the years go by, but we couldn't wait! Obviously, I am getting a few more bottles to cellar.

Time to get off the beaten path and try an extraordinary white from the Central Coast that's not Chardonnay! That's right, another white wine can be just as full-bodied and rich as a Chardonnay. This blend of 90% Roussanne and 10% Viognier blew us away when we tasted this in September. We had already purchased a ton of the Syrah from Stolpman (which is a steal at $16.98, by the way) and wanted to check out some of the other wines from them. The wine that gave us the "Wow factor" was the L'Avion. Unctuous, exotic, and rich. Flat-out delicious juice! We quickly held up our shipment of the Syrah to add some of the L'Avion.

Tom Stolpman decided to experiment with Roussanne in a narrow, straight valley used in the 1930s and 1940s to land the previous owner's small plane. Hence the Avant-Garde label and name L'Avion "The Airplane."

The Roussanne (a late ripening grape) is typically picked in mid-November at Stolpman Vineyards whereas the Viognier is normally picked in early October. They left the Viognier on the vines until just before they picked the Roussanne. The Viognier was essentially picked late harvest. And even though they used 10% percent Viognier by fruit tonnage the actual liquid represented just 3%. Maybe that's too much information. The wine is plain awesome!

We were so honored to work on our very first Grand Finale Pinot Noir with THE authorities on California Pinot, the folks at Saintsbury. In a very educational and thorough blending session at their certified Napa Green and solar-powered winery, winemakers Dick Ward and Jerome Chery helped us choose the perfect combination of clones and vineyard source for our one-of-a-kind 2007 bottling. (Talk about kids in a candy store!)

The winning combo: I & H Swan clones from the Lee Vineyard, situated just across the street from the Saintsbury's winery on Los Carneros Ave. Ira and Shirley Lee first planted their vineyard here in 1969, and later created the "Keep Carneros Green" initiative to keep the rolling hills pristine and free from overdevelopment. It's no surprise that we loved the Lee Vineyard fruit, as this vineyard displays the most primal Pinot Noir fruit character of all three of their vineyards, and is quite possibly the best for ageing potential.

Brooding aromas of ripe red and black plums, raspberry, and cedar give way to some wild herbs and flowers on the nose. Dark berry fruits, forest floor, and a creamy texture balance bright, mouth-watering acidity on the palate. She's already a beauty, and is only getting better each time we re-taste.

Socre Barbaresco Roncaglie enjoys a very special provenance. It hails from ten to fifty year-old vines in a single vineyard within Roncaglie: one of the Grand Crus of Barbaresco. (Neighbors include the very popular Angelo Gaja Sori Tildin and Costa Russi vineyards.)

Here, the Nebbiolo grape flourishes on sandier soils than those of nearby Barolo, lending more beneficial minerals and a more delicate structure to the grapes. After 24 months of barrel-ageing and 12 months resting in bottles, this wine displays classically refined notes of roses and violets, backed by wild red berries and earthy aromas. The 2005 is more structured than the 2003 and should benefit from a few years of aging. Socre is indeed a fine example of what Barbaresco, and indeed the Nebbiolo grape, can be.

2007 Chateauneuf-du-Pape. - In our view the best vintage since 1990!

Robert Parker had a similar view of the 2007 vintage, though he was even more bullish calling it the best vintage of his lifetime.

Robert Parker may of have been thinking about the 2007 Pierre Usseglio Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Deux Freres when he made the statement above. He recently awarded it the perfect 100 point score.

The perfect 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Deux Freres is slightly more evolved and complex than the Mon Aieul, as odd as that seems. Having had it twice out of bottle, this wine (nearly 100% Grenache combined with a few dollops of Syrah) possesses an opaque ruby/purple color as well as a thrilling texture and monumental length (the finish lasts over 60 seconds). It-s a blockbuster, but everything is in perfect balance, and, remarkably, it comes across as the most accessible Reserve des Deux Freres made to date. This wine-s aging is completely different from its sibling-s. Sixty percent is aged in 1, 2, and 3-year-old Burgundy barrels, and the rest in small new oak barrels, but there is not a hint of new oak in the aromatics. The bouquet reveals plenty of blackberry, blueberry, and cassis fruit intertwined with notions of melted licorice, spring flowers, and that classic garrigue note that comes across as the seaweed wrapper used in sushi restaurants, nori. There is a ! certain smokiness that is probably attributable to the oak, and the wine has incredible depth and richness, as well as a finish that seems endless. This extraordinary Chateauneuf du Pape is another prodigious effort in this historic vintage. It should drink well for two decades or more.

Sette Ponti's flagship bottling, Oreno, is always among the best wines to come out of Tuscany each year, often selling for closer to $100 a bottle. So when this offer landed on our desks, we didn't blink for a second. $59.99 a bottle for one of the top Tuscans from 2006! The 2006 Oreno (50% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot) combines elements of ripeness and firm, vibrant structure in a beautifully-balanced, gorgeous wine. Tar, smoke, licorice, new leather and menthol notes emerge, adding layers of expressiveness to the dark fruit. This is a powerful Oreno made in a less immediate style than the 2007. The 1998 Vintage is extremely primary at this stage. Today the wine remains mostly about a pure, unadulterated expression of fruit, but the Krug house style is nevertheless present. This powerful Champagne needs time in the cellar to develop its full range of aromas and flavors, but it is impressive and should age quite well. The 1998 is only the third (and last) vintage Krug declared in the 1990s. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2028.

Wine Spectator 96 Points

Gorgeous aromas of lemon, peach, toast, leather and spices. The attack is rich and forceful, backed by a racy structure that keeps it pure and drives the finish. Perhaps not as expansive on the aftertasteto match the attack, but long nonetheless, with spice and minerals lingering. Still needs time. Best from 2012 through 2035.—B.S.

Bright true gold with a brisk bead. Deeply concentrated honey, pear skin, orange peel, peach pit, botanical herb and floral aromas are brightened by smoky minerals. Chewy citrus and pit fruit flavors stain the palate and are given a youthfully tangy edge by nervy acidity, gaining strength with air. Finishes with powerful grip and resounding echoes of honey and citrus pith. A serious, painfully young wine that needs patience; I wouldn't go near it for at least another six or seven years.
