The 2007 vintage in Tuscany continues to impress us. We recently tasted the “original Super Tuscan” from that much heralded vintage, the Antinori Tignanello, a blend of 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc. It has superb concentration and depth of flavors that you come to expect from a 2007 Tuscan. What separates it from many other Super Tuscans we have tasted is its amazing structure and balance. This is a Tig that is worthy of putting in the cellar for 5-7 years and possibly longer.

Antonio Galloni of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, awarded the 2007 Tignanello a rating of 95 points and called it magnificent. 95 points is the highest rating Tignanello has ever received from the Wine Advocate. It even outscored the great 1990 and 1997 vintages! He noted that it should drink well within a year and age for another 15 years.

Antonio Galloni Wine Advocate 95 Points-- Antinori’s 2007 Tignanello is wonderfully ripe and seductive in its dark cherries, flowers, spices, tobacco, sage, cedar, mint and minerals. This is as opulent a Tignanello as I have ever tasted but there is just enough acidity and structure from the Sangiovese to keep things from going over the top. The wine’s richness and warmth are such that in a blind tasting I mistook the 2007 Tignanello for a wine from Maremma! The dense, muscular fruit follows through to an impeccable finish with no hard edges and impossibly fine, silky tannins. Simply put, the 2007 is a magnificent Tignanello. The 2007 Tignanello is 80% Sangiovese aged in 300-liter French oak barrels (1/3 new), 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, both aged in 100% new 225-liter French oak barriques. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2027.

Beautiful black raspberry, blueberry, spicy, peppery fruit jump from the glass of this dense purple wine. Foley has somehow built considerable sweet tannin into the full-bodied, fleshy mouthfeel. This is something California needs to do more of – creative blends that are loaded with personality and soul. This wine is part Rhone Ranger and part classic Napa Cabernet. Drink it over the next decade. “

“The 2007 Malbec, sourced from ungrafted vines with an average age of over 100 years. It was aged for 12 months in new French oak.
