Our latest Go Figure release is Lot 6, a gorgeous Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley of Oregon, the source of many of America's finest Pinots. We sourced this bottling from our friends at one of the valley's newest producers, one that has rapidly become one of the hottest Burgundian styled wineries in Oregon.

Our Go Figure Lot 6 comes from the 2008 vintage. 2008 is being widely acclaimed as the best year in Oregon in many years. Since the winery that produced Lot 6 had three of their Pinots score over 90 points in the '07 vintage, including one that earned mentions in lists of the best wines of 2009, and this comes from a superior year, you can imagine how spectacular it tastes, and how excited we are to be able to offer this beauty of a Pinot from the Willamette to our Gary's customers.

We first tasted the 2007 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape while were in the Rhone Valley in March of this year. We tasted in the cellars at the Chateau. The wine was spectacular and actually somewhat approachable at the time. Rich and concentrated fruit, beautifuly spice, sweet tannins, and structured with a long, long, long finish. The visit and tasting was one of the highlights of our trip.

We also tasted it again recently at our Grand Tasting in October. We couldn't believe how much better it was now then it was when we first tasted it. The tannins were more integrated into the wine and it displayed an amazing elegance for a young Beaucastel. Jon Visser, our French Wine Buyer, thought it was the best young Beaucastel that he's ever had. Possibly as good as the 1989!

Extremely dense, with layer upon layer of melted fig, mulled boysenberry and black currant fruit, all laced with notes of charred mesquite, hoisin sauce and Kenya AA coffee. The long, silky mouthfeel belies the latent power in reserve-and there's a lot of it, with waves of grip driving the finish. Best from 2010 through 2030.

Beaucastel’s 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape has turned out even better out of bottle than I predicted. An inky/ruby/purple color is followed by a glorious nose of blue and black fruits, truffles, pen ink, licorice, and meat juices as well as glorious levels of acidity and sweet tannin, buttressing the fruit’s fabulous freshness and vibrancy. This full-bodied effort still displays considerable tannin, no doubt because of the relatively high Mourvedre content. It should resolve its tannins in 2-4 years, and last for 25 or more.
