For over one hundred years the Janoueix family have been intimately involved in the world of Bordeaux wine as both merchants and winegrowers. The family owns a dozen different properties scattered over the right bank appellations of Saint Emilion, Pomerol, and Cotes de Castillon.

The youngest son of the fourth generation, Jean-Philippe Janoueix, is the proprietor of La Confession, and two Bordeaux Superieur properties, La Croix Mouton, and Le Conseiller. He is the winemaker for a number of the family properties and was named "Bordeaux Winemaker of the Year 2003".

La Confession is a small property of just 7 acres, planted to 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Since its first vintage in 2001, this garagiste operation has quickly vaulted into the top ranks of St. Emilion producers with its concentrated, fruit filled wines. It has garnered 90+ point ratings for every vintage from Robert Parker, yet the pricing remains remarkably affordable.

Reviews

Robert Parker 91 points

Performing much better than it did from barrel, the 2004 La Confession has added significant weight and opulence over the last year. Young proprietor Jean-Philippe Janoueix has produced a fabulous effort for the vintage. Its dense plum/purple color is accompanied by a big, sweet perfume of creosote, blackberries, blueberries, truffles, licorice, and espresso roast. Opulent, rich, and full-bodied, this stunning St.-Emilion will drink well for 12-15 years.

The Perfect Malbec For A Steak!

The Colome Malbec is produced primarily from vines planted over 150 years ago. Bodega Colome vineyards are bio-dynamically and sustainably farmed at an altitude of 5,500 to 8,500 feet and are believed to be the highest vineyards in the world.

The cooler climate from the higher elevation shows in the wine. It has a deep purple color with great blackberry fruit, black licorice, some pepper, and very structured on the mid-palate. This Malbec needs a steak to go along with it.

Reviews

Wine Spectator 92 Points

Quite ripe, with nearly exotic plum sauce, braised fig and crushed blueberry notes rolled together, while spice, mocha and incense hints help stretch out the juicy, dense finish. A flashy style, but well-balanced. Drink now through 2012. 5,500 cases imported. -JM

Wall Street Journal Best Barolo under $40 Very Good.
Real focus and nice edges. Highly personal, with huge fruit that's so pure and real it's easy to drink despite its size. Quite a wine.

Jon Visser, Wine Buyer 4 stars.
Amber color. Very classic Barolo that's full-bodied and powerful. A lot more structure than most $30 Barolos. Cherry, plum, and some tobacco with a long, chewy finish. The tannins are ripe enough though. Decant it for 30 minutes if possible. A real nice Barolo for $30!

Wine Advocate

Robert Parker recently released his latest Wine Advocate including his report on the 2008 vintage in Bordeaux. He sees many wines from 2008 rivaling their 2005s.

"... the quality of the 2008 vintage turned out to be excellent, with a number of superb wines that are close to, if not equal to the prodigious 2005 or 2000 vintages (two years with many of the best wines I have ever tasted from top to bottom)"

Reviews

Neal Martin Wine Advocate 91-93 Points

The 2008 Rieussec has a lifted, honeyed, slightly petrolly nose with great definition and lift. Touches of white flowers and white peach/honeysuckle develop with further aeration. The palate has a vibrant orange and mandarin flavored entry, very good balance, nicely poised with touches of vanilla inflecting the viscous, honeyed fruit on the finish.

Robert Parker 95-97 Points

What a worthy rival to the prodigious 2005! This is another superb success from proprietress Christine Valette, but it is distressing to hear that this property may be up for sale. The inky/blue/purple-colored, formidably concentrated 2008 exhibits aromas of smoke, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, roasted coffee, and spice box. Boasting fabulous fruit and purity, a multilayered texture, full body, and prominent, but sweet, well-integrated tannin, this is a tour de force in winemaking from an outstanding and a perfectionist proprietor. Give it 5-6 years of bottle age, and drink it over the following three decades.

Wine Spectator 91-94 Points

This is very serious and impressive for the vintage, offering silky tannins and cool, racy fruit, with nutmeg, blackberry and light vanilla character.-JS

Robert Parker 96-98+ Points

A wine for our children's children. Nobody in Bordeaux is more attentive to detail than Alfred Tesseron is at Pontet-Canet. Fashioned from incredibly low yields, a very late harvest, and a Draconian selection, the 2008 will not be close to drinkability for at least a decade, and it should still be in superb form circa 2060. An absolutely amazing effort, it boasts an inky/black/purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of creme de cassis, graphite, charcoal, and incense, blockbuster depth, and full-bodied power. The tannins are high, but they are remarkably velvety as well as well-integrated. Sensational acidity gives the wine precision and vibrancy, but the impression is one of massive concentration and power. The 2008 Pontet-Canet, a candidate for the wine of the vintage, is a tour de force in viticultural precision and winemaking savoir faire.

Wine Spectator 90-93

Very dark and brilliant in color, showing wonderful pure fruit, with crushed blackberry, currant and fresh-cut flowers. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and a long, crisp, fruity finish. This offers impressive finesse and length.-JS

International Wine Cellar 91-94 Points

Saturated inky-ruby. Classy aromas of blackcurrant and graphite are lifted by Oriental spices and plum liqueur. Sweet, dense and consistent from start to finish, with enticing, creamy flavors of dark berries and chocolate. Finishes long and pure, with a solid tannic bite but with so much sweet, ripe fruit that you hardly notice. Pontet-Canet has been consistently excellent in recent years, and this vintage appears to be among the most successful.

Robert Parker 94-96 Points

The 2008 is a marvelous effort from this property situated adjacent to Petrus and only a stone's throw from l'Evangile. An amazing effort, the wine exhibits an inky/ruby/purple color, wonderful concentration, a beautifully sweet perfume of caramels, mocha, jammy black currants, and smoky blackberries, a full-bodied mouthfeel, a layered, skyscraper-like texture, and sweet but elevated tannins. Overall, it displays gorgeous freshness and delineation. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025.
