The 1998 Brut Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill opens with intriguing, exotic notes of smoke, cured meats and tar. This is a big, sweeping Sir Winston Churchill endowed with layers of perfumed ripe pears, quince, flowers and spices in a style that balances a generous expression of fruit with acidity and minerality. Everything is in the right place in this delicate yet deeply satisfying Champagne. This bottle was disgorged at the beginning of 2007. Winston Churchill is Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with Pinot playing the leading role. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2023.

A bracing version, with loads of energy driving its apple, grapefruit and pastry flavors. Mineral and ginger notes enter the mix as this glides to a long finish. Drink now through 2022. 250 cases imported.–BS

International Wine Cellar 93 Points

Light gold. Intensely aromatic nose offers a complex bouquet of smoky orchard and pit fruit aromas, along with exotic orange zest and white pepper. Deep and chewy, displaying impressively concentrated but brisk pear and bitter citrus pith flavors and an undercurrent of buttery brioche and lees. Finishes with palate-staining persistence and a subtle anise quality. As usual, a stunner.

Burghound 96 Points

This Cuvée was created in homage to Sir Winston Churchill to embody the qualities he preferred in his Champagne: robustness, a full bodied character and relative maturity; the fruit is from grand cru vineyards that were under vine during the lifetime of Churchill and this is only made in the best vintages. I am not always knocked out by the quality of what I find with this prestige cuvée, but when it’s right, it’s really right. A glorious and superbly classy nose of remarkable complexity that is neither young nor aged slides gracefully into equally complex flavors that caress the palate and the aspect that makes this all the more appealing is the sappiness on the finish that confers a textured character to the mouth feel. If there is a nit, and I stress that it’s only a nit, this is perhaps not quite as refined as the very best grands cuvées in Champagne but in a sense, this is like the old man himself – great but not necessarily a man of finesse. Whatever anthropomorphic descriptor you wish to invoke, this is a great example that could be drunk and enjoyed now or easily held for another ten years.

Even at 10 years, this is still just setting out. While it doesn’t have the immensity of the 1996, it has a great intense grapefruit, pear and fresh apricot series of flavors that come through with toast, ripeness and a suggestion of almonds. 7–8 years aging. - R.V.

2005 Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte Les Hauts de Smith Pessac Leognan

Les Hauts de Smith represents a true "second label" of Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte. It is drawn from the same vineyards, handled in exactly the same way in the winery. The selection is made by the winemaker on a barrel by barrel basis, selecting which wines are to be Smith Haut Lafitte and which are to be Les Hauts de Smith.

2005 Chateau Moulinet Pomerol

Chateau Moulinet sits in the northwestern part of Pomerol, and area dominated by clayey and sandy soils. These soils produce wines that are lighter, with more refined tannins than those from the clay and gravel soils of the eastern part of the commune.

At our Grand Tasting, Moulinet was one of the hits of the 2005 Bordeaux table, drawing numerous raves from our customers for its smoothness, delicacy, and long, gentle finish.

2005 Chateau Tour du Pas St Georges Saint Emilion

Pascal Delbeck Superstar of Saint Emilion!

Pascal Delbeck has been the winemaker at the legendary Chateau Ausone for over thirty years, and has been the chateau's owner since 1997, as well as owning the nearly as famous Chateau Bel Air. He has been long recognized as one of Saint Emilion's finest winemakers. He now brings his years of expertise to his newest project, Chateau Tour du Pas St Georges.

Saint-Georges Saint-Emilion has long been recognized as the most prestigious and most high quality of the "satellites Saint-Emilion", the smaller villages that surround the hilltop village. The site of Chateau Tour du Pas St Georges is an exceptional one, with an ideal mixture of soil types covering 35 acres which are situated on a south facing slope to ensure that the grapes achieve optimal ripeness.

Chateau Tour du Pas St Georges is a blend of 60% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in oak for 15 months. The barrels used are a mixture of 30% new, 50% one year old, and 20% that have been used briefly for the fermentation of white wines. The resulting wine has all of the best characters of the region. It has a beautiful bright red/purple color, with an aroma of very ripe red fruit and cocoa. In the mouth the fruit character is reinforced, with an added structure provided by fine, elegant tannins. The mouthfeel is very smooth, and is followed by a long, bold finish.
