One of the most, if not the most, famous producer in the Mosel region of Germany is Johann Josef Prum, more commonly known as J J Prum. The J J Prum estate has holdings in premier vineyard sites throughout the Mosel, but the vineyard of Sonnenuhr arguably is their best.

The search for a quality Sauvignon Blanc under $10 is always a difficult task. For this reason we recently picked out a number of inexpensive Sauvignon Blancs from around the world to taste in hopes of finding a few quality ones.

What we discovered, which is no surprise, was that the best values seemed to be from Chile and New Zealand. Most of the New Zealand wines fell in the $10-15 range though. The Chileans were very reasonably priced below the $10 mark. The best of the group was the 2010 Casa Julia Sauvignon Blanc.

The 2010 Casa Julia Sauvignon Blanc displayed ripe honeydew melon and pear with a very soft and supple finish. It was just a perfect summer white wine, a fruit driven styled Sauvignon Blanc with a smooth finish. Josh Raynolds of the International Wine Cellar agreed with us, rating it 88 points!

2009 in the southern Rhone is yet another strong vintage. It may not quite eclipse the 2007 vintage, but 2009 is regarded as an excellent vintage, as it was in most of France and Europe for that matter. One of the best 2009 southern Rhones we’ve tasted so far is the Domaine la Milliere Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes.

The 2009 Domaine la Milliere Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is a more explosive style than previous vintages of the same wine. The 2009 has a lot more concentration, structure, and will have greater longevity in the cellar.

Robert Parker mentioned in his tasting note that it is “Dense, thick and rich, it is potentially one of the few 2009 Chateauneuf du Papes that will eclipse its 2007 counterpart.” He gave a rating of 92-95+ to the 2009 Domaine la Milliere. Heady black cherry and blackberry aromas, Asian spices, incense, and mineral notes lead to a dense, layered, rich old-vine Garnacha that over-delivers in a big way. A tasting of every vintage of Tres Picos ever produced (back to 2001) at the Bodega in January 2011 indicates that 8-10 years of pleasurable drinking is a reasonable expectation. However, this is a wine that is ready to drink on release.

International Wine Cellar 91 Points-- Glass-staining ruby. An explosive, flamboyantly perfumed bouquet exudes scents of blackberry, cherry cola, violet and cracked pepper, plus a hint of smokiness. Deeply pitched flavors of dark fruits and candied flowers remind me of syrah, but red fruit notes emerge with air, confirming that this is garnacha, not syrah. Intense, focused and impressively persistent on the finish, which echoes the sweet red and dark fruit notes and leaves a subtle smoky quality. This serious wine should be even better in a couple of years.

The 2010 Domaine d’Andezon Cotes du Rhone is a blend of 90% Syrah and 10% Grenache. It has a deep purple, almost black, color. There are a lot of floral characteristics on the nose. On the palate a ton of dark fruits including blueberries and blackberries, and even a little raspberry. Full-bodied and well structured. There is a lot of wine here for a such a reasonable price!

Robert Parker 95-97 Points-- The blend of the 2008 Insignia, 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 4% Merlot, is not terribly different from the 2007. However, I suspect the production will be a lot less given the frost damage in early spring. The color is an inky/purple and the wine shows lots of cassis, blueberry, graphite and floral notes, good acidity, stunning concentration and purity, and a long finish. Another great success for Phelps, the 2007 and 2008 Insignias may be the best back-to-back vintages they have produced since 1995 and 1994. The 2008 has some tannins to resolve whereas the 2007 has already assimilated them. It appears the 2008 will require 2-3 years of bottle age, but should last for three decades.

James Suckling 95 Points-- What a wonderful wine here. The nose shows a fabulous combination of dark fruits, chocolate, spices and caramel. The palate is silky textured with lots of ripe yet beautiful fruit and super silky, tight tannins This is a balanced wine with all the potential to age for decades. Made from 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 4% Merlot.

A classic vintage for this wine. Christian Moreau reminded me that the family's major parcel of Clos goes from the bottom to the top of this grand cru. Fabien does three different vinifications before blending the lots at the end. Part of this cuvee went back into barrels for five months following the racking after the malolactic fermentation.

It’s probably no surprise to Robert Parker since he called it “reminiscent of the 1982 Pichon Lalande” and mentioned in his tasting note from 2006 that it could be drunk then or cellared for 20 years or more. Five years later and it’s right in the sweet spot for drinking.

The white wines from Domaine de Chevalier are always very difficult to find. They only produce about 2000 cases total between the Grand Vin and the Second label, l'Esprit de Chevalier. There are actually only about 800 cases produced of the Esprit.

We discovered the 2009 l'Esprit de Chevalier Blanc while tasting with a new supplier from Bordeaux in February. We tasted a large number of 2009 white Bordeaux while in Bordeaux in April last year, and many of them were very rich and concentrated, yet seemed to need a little time in the bottle to settle down. The 2009 l'Esprit displayed the amazing concentration of flavors that you expect from 2009, but the difference was that it also showed great balance on the finish with soft acidity.

The 2009 l'Esprit de Chevalier Blanc was produced from the same vineyards that yielded the Robert Parker 96-98 point Domaine de Chevalier Blanc. The l'Esprit has not been reviewed yet, but it’s a winner that drinks more like a $40 wine.

The Produttori del Barbaresco decided not to bottle any Riserva in 2006, so in 2009 they began blending the wine destined for Riserva into their regular bottling. Antonio Galloni of the Wine Advocate recently detailed this on the bulletin board on eRobertParker.com, "Lots that start with 2010 include 50% Riserva juice. Lots that start with 09 and are under 120 have 0% Riserva juice, lots above 09.120 include 30% Riserva juice. The first two numbers are the year, the second number is the calendar day... At Produttori each bottling day is assigned a lot number, but there are in reality only three unique 'lots' in the sense most commonly used."

Here’s what Antonio Galloni said about the 2006 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco that didn't have any Riserva blended in, “If there is a better bottle of age worthy red wine from anywhere in the world sub $30 I would like to know about it. This is a back up the truck wine and a fabulous effort from the Produttori.” Just imagine how much better the lots from 2010 are with 50% of the Riserva in the blend now.

Today the wine is remarkable for its depth and concentration, while the aromatic complexity will develop in bottle. Tablas Creek Winery in Paso Robles, California was founded by the Perrin family, owners of the great Rhone valley estate Chateau de Beaucastel, and Robert Haas, founder of a well-regarded wine import company, Vineyard Brands.

The winery was created with the southern Rhone Valley in mind. The winery is dedicated to Rhone varietals, and for their reds, they use a similar blend of grapes to that of the Perrin family’s Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape. They imported vine cuttings from their estate in the Rhone valley, and the grapes are organically grown.

The 2009 Tablas Creek Cote de Tablas Rouge is a blend of primarily Grenache with Syrah, Counoise, and Mourvedre. A big, explosive Rhone blend that could handle any steak or sweet/spicy sausages on the grill. Let it breathe for 30 minutes if you can. It’s a monster.

99 Points And A Great Dominus For The Cellar

2008 Dominus Estate

The new vintage of Dominus will be here on Tuesday. It is the much anticipated and highly rated 2008 vintage. Robert Parker rated the 2008 at 99 points which ties it with the 1994 as the highest rated Dominus ever!

Only three Cabernet based wines from Napa in 2008 outscored Dominus, receiving 100 point scores, but they sell for two to three times the price, a lot to pay for one point!

There won’t be as much wine to go around with the 2008. The production of the 2008 was about 20% lower than that of the 2007 vintage. We were able to keep the 2007 in stock for a little while, but we’re not sure if we’ll be able to do the same with the 2008.

The blend for the 2008 Dominus Estate is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petite Verdot. The price is $169.00 per bottle on sale.

Robert Parker 99 Points-- Made in a more masculine style, the 2008 Dominus has all of that along with bigger body and more structure, fat, density and texture. Both are brilliant wines and they represent the finest back-to-back vintages for Dominus since 2001 and 2002 or 1990 and 1991. Both the 2007 and 2008 Dominus should drink well for 25-30 years.

This estate, owned by Christian Moueix, includes the famed Napanook Vineyard that was the base of so many of the historic Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignons of the 1950s and 1960s. Interestingly, they have completely eliminated Merlot from the bottling....There are 4,200 cases of the 2008 Dominus which is composed of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Lower yields resulted in a denser, more concentrated wine. The remarkable thing about these cuvees is that they smell like a hypothetical blend of a top Napa Cabernet Sauvignon and a serious Bordeaux, possibly a cross blend of a Pomerol and Pauillac. Both wines possess silky sweet tannins, which is the big difference between Dominus post-1990 and the first seven vintages, where the tannin content was relatively high. About 40% new oak is used in their upbringing...
